Crank gear has a mark [dot] on a tooth, cam gear has a mark [dot ] between 2 teeth . Line 'em up.

Just go to your nearest public library, they actually have MOTORS and CHILTONS there, usually. And, stay away from those "phenolic" timing gear sets! And, there SHOULD be a dot on each of the gears according to my CHILTONS. Like squirrel said, are the gears on CORRECTLY? Butch/56sedandelivery.

Dont feel to bad, i knew a guy that did that to a small block chevy, but he put it at the top, needless to say the car was 180 out.

Half, did you get it figured out yet ?
The little dot on the crank gear lines up with the dot on the cam gear.
Was it lined up that way when you took it apart ?

So what ? Small block Chevy, doesn't make any difference if you put the cam dot straight up or straight down. It can't be 180 degrees out.
