I may have lost the coolest tool that my grandfather gave me, and now I am not sure that it is even made anymore.

It is a socket adapter that goes directly from a 1/4" drive ratchet, to a 1/2" drive socket, in one step.

I have used it over 100-times to set pinion preload. Now, it is not in its marked space in the drawer, and is nowhere to be found.

Does anyone know if this tool still exists? I cannot seem to find one. I don't like stacking adapters with this low a torque reading, and not with a rotating measurement. Slop creates errors.

I welded two together to make mine.
I wonder if HF sells something like that?

Could it be in the location you have reserved for your 10mm socket?

He wants 1/4 to 1/2. Hard to find. 1/4 female to 1/2 male

    I have 12 of of those in 6-point, and 8 in 12-point.

    Correct, on both counts.

I will likely resort to welding two adapters together, but would rather have the real-deal.

I've been doing some Remote Viewing. Check behind the toolbox cabinet, it fell down and rolled next to the wall. Thank me later.

It will be laying in plain site as soon as you get another one. :D

  9. Go to H F & buy a 1/4" drive torque set. They are under $20.00 & are close enough.

  10. I've got a Crapsman 1/4 to 1/2. They should still make them.
It's easy to miss them when mixed with sockets or left on a socket.

Did not know that adapter was ever made,I do have a few 1/4 to 3/8 and might have to look for one since I could have used one many times.

Weld a chunk of 1/2 inch square stock in a POS 1/4 inch socket.

Porkshop, I don't think Snap-on has that item.

Gimpy, I can see why that would be good for checking pinion preload. But, the slop you refer to does not affect torque readings as long as you are not introducing a side load into the assembly.
I spent 22 years at Snap-on and put on countless torque seminars as both an engineer and Government Sales Rep. Trust me on this one.

But that being said, I would buy said adapter if I could find one for exactly the purpose you stated. I also set carrier preload that same way.

  18. I have never seen a 1/4 to 1/2 adapter, and I wouldn't waste the big bucks it is going to cost to buy an expensive Snap On tool if it is only going to get used once in a blue moon. I would weld a 1/2 square piece onto a POS 1/4 socket that has been ground down enough to keep the adaptor short. For the 1/2 inch piece, I would look to sacrifice a cheep, bent, damaged, 1/2 extension or the nose of a flex tool as the donor.
From my personal point of view, my inch pound torque wrench is 3/8 ths, and I can't think of a time in 60 years, when I have needed to go from 1/4 to 1/2 directly where I haven't been able to use 2 adapters.

I average two gear changes a month. More in the summer time.

I don't care about money. As long as I am not dead, I can just make more.

It was a Williams adapter, I think, and it was older than me.

  21. Williams was Snap-on's industrial line (now discontinued I believe), so I'd look in industrial tool suppliers, not automotive. May be unobtainium new these days, sounds like an eBay search is in order....

They used to sell Williams tools at an auto parts store where I grew up.....I didn't know they were connected to Snap-On. I still have some wrenches....very good quality

Gimpy, hope you find the ‘misplaced’ adapter......sentimental value is worth a lot, even if you can find a replacement.

I googled it and that is 1/4 to 3/8. Gimpy wanted 1/4 to 1/2.
