Yesterday, I was pressing a new throw out bearing on the retainer of my 50 Plymouth. It took more pressure than I thought, but with a pretty loud snap it seated on the retainer. I gave the press just a small pump to make sure, and the whole cast piece shattered. For a split second before that happened, I knew it was going to happen. I feel like every time I've broken something working on a car, I knew I was about to break it; Just not soon enough. Oh well, at least it's not a rare piece and I'll have a new used one in 4 days.
    Am I alone on this?

I think f’n up is in all of us…

  4. I always torque a bolt till it snaps, then back off a quarter turn. And I never find anything in the last place I look. After I find it, I always look in at least two more spots just to make sure....

oh, and I forgot one. If there is absolutely, positively only two ways something can fit, I'll get it right on the fifth try...

  5. If you see the future too late....does that mean you see the present?

I got a spare throw out bearing retainer, if you need it. Just holler.
Now that my 1.5 year old son is up and running with his 5 year old brother, my foresight for catastrophe is at maximum power. Even been able to prevent a few things!

A week? Usually the next day, if not sooner...

And I got so good at breaking things, I did it for a living for a number of years.

  15. It’s been a long long time .

but when your tightening a bolt and it’s getting snug , getting snug …. Then gets loose !!!!!!
So you go a 1/2 turn more just to be sure

If it’s got tits or tires it’s gonna give you problems !

I have been very successful in breaking things on a press. It appears to be one of my talents.

  21. I've come across this a lot over the years...somebody would "torque" a bolt or screw until it got easy, back it off a bit, and then leave it there to heal itself. o_O

Screwing up stuff is the only thing I'm good at. That moment when a bolt lets go makes a particular sound in my brain, every time. Y'all have heard it, too.

Yeah I had that same feeling when trying to get the pins out of my 8.8 spider gears….right before it made that same noise.

Every thing needs "just a little more" to take it from just right to perfect.

  25. At least I’m not the only one with this problem. Thanks guys. :D

  26. There's no "muscle memory" or "feel" in a hydraulic press.
Like the song says, "You don't know wa'choo got 'till it's gone".
You might be foggy on seeing the future....... but you've got perfect 20/20 hindsight.

I'm 46 and have finally started listening to my "INNER - OH SHIT" walk away for a breather is OK.

I figure there would been a lot less broken bones, crashed cars, blown engines if I'd learned this earlier.

No matter how much restraint I think I may have obtained, I'm never riding a F'n motorcycle again.

It is probably safer to race motorcycles on the track than to ride on public roads.
At least everyone is going the same way, and everyone has their mind on the job.............

  30. Hell, it's safer to drive in a demolition derby than on today's roads.... at least you know what to expect!
