I have a 371 olds with what appears to be a 4sp hydro with the slant pan if there were any id tags there not there now but there is some cast numbers It does have a b&m shifter but im not convinced its a b&m hydro is there anyone able to help me id this thing or what to look for
B&M was or is pretty proud of there stuff if it were a B&M Hydro it would have a tag on the passenger side pretty large and hard to miss. That doesn't mean that it hasn't been altered or even had some B&M pieces stuffed in it. if it is a slant pan it is a dual range or 4 speed which ever you prefer. I would like to get up close and personal with the shifter so I could build a copy for myself.
Yea it's a four speed hydro. Judging by the #'s just above the pan cfd 5 8615013 it could be from Olds, Cad or Pontiac. I've had haydros from all three makes with the same no. except they were cfd 4, 7, & 9. Pornbeaner, I still have a copy of the instructions from my Hurst Hydra Shift with exploded views if that's any help. I could print out a copy and throw it in the mail. pm me if that would help.
I could really use a few close ups of the shifter also. I have 2 B&M Hydro Sticks and misc. shifter parts. Need to see what it will take to make up a shifter. Thanks, Lee
My 56 Hydramatic has a riveted aluminum Hydramatic tag with I think red backround. The number starts with 55- , meaning 55, then a space, then the number. I thought it might be the year, because the only 56 Olds that still used the dual range instead of the Jetaway, was the cheapie base model 88. Several old racers I have talked with that ran Olds, said many race transmission places did their own versions of a hydrostick, so they probably never had a special tag, if it was a small shop.
That can't be a 371, since the intgrated bell housing has the vent holes that were only on 303 and 324 blocks. The 371's did not use air cooling as the Jetaways had cooling from radiator.
Hmmmmn I never gave that any thought, the bell/adapter for my B&M unit for the 394 has vents in it but the extended block does not, I wonder if I should ventilate it. @d2_willys as they say in South Texas *Opina me mang. @550Coupe I doubt that you will see this as your post is about 4 or 5 years old but yes I could use the pics of the shifter. And just to add bandwidth to this thread here is a pic of the B&M tag for those who are wondering what the hell I was talking about so many years ago. *Give me your opinion man.
@porknbeaner @ljs05 If you two are looking for pictures of the B&M Hydro Stick, I've got them here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/b-m-parts-for-hydro-modification.911083/ My Hydro group may be harder to find with the new format, but all the info is still there! Hydro Tech
If it's a modified trans, could be a Hydro-Motive, out of Chicago. They were B&Ms' competitor in the mid-west and east. This one that goes behind my 389 Pontiac.
Slant pan Hydros were only used in 54-56 Olds and 55-56 Ponts (some later 56 Ponts got the Strat o-Flight Hydro); they also only had single (rear) band adjustment, and ther front band was internally adjustable. Other versions of the Hydro had two externally adjustable bands. Beaners photo of his trans shows where the factory I.D. tag was riveted on with 2 rivets; B & M removed the tags when they built a Hydro and attached their sticker with the application code. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
