i'm looking for full moon or as some people call them, "smoothie" hub caps.

i see them all day long in 14 and 15 inch versions. now are they for 14 and 15 inch wheels? some people say i need the 15 inch version and then run a trim ring. if that's the case, how do the centers mount to the wheels?

i know at one time they made them one piece. a friend has a set of 16 inch flipper hubcaps on his 41 ford. (basically a full moon style cap with a bar added).

looking for ones with a deep dome to clear the axle stubs on the rear and because they look better.
i need to browse through some of rik hovings posts to see some vintage samples.

The Moon company makes Moon hubcaps. And they still make 16", even the deep dish you want. Not sure about the snap on kind, but the screw on are more authentic anyways.

Anything with a flipper is not a Moon cap. Those are another style all together.

i've heard people on here call them that as opposed to baby moon. the others i've always heard called discs as in moon discs.

this is the style i'm looking for.

  4. The early Lyons brand hubcap is similar, but hard to find and generally not cheap if you do...

Bob Drake had what he called "baby moons" for '40 thru '48, PN 01A-1130-BM knowing Drake, they are probably on backorder though.

Yes, after I read it again I realized that, Drake probably has them on backorder also.

early version: full caps on painted steel wheels

later version: baby moons on chrome wheels

  12. ........These '46 Merc caps are deep enough to clear the axle stubs. 21270990_1530656246979881_7265124734993465123_n.jpg 20160830_180757.jpg FB_IMG_1525008048923 (1).jpg 044-vi (1).jpg 20171112_180732.jpg

  13. This is the hubcap style (vs. the full wheelcover you're referring to). It has the same mount as a '40-48 Ford and Merc cap (or has had one welded in place as many are made for other wheels and later modified). For a 16" wheel running a trim ring, the cap ends up being right around 13.75"

I have seen the full wheelcover version of this and similar looks, with and without the bars, but as mentioned they're scarce. Lyons, Calnevar, National, and Cal Custom are some of the common brands. And from what I've seen, most mount to the outer lip of the wheel.

so no one is reproducing full caps. my best bet is to mount the trim rings of my choice, measure the I.D.
then mount a center cap that best fills the inner diameter of the trim ring.

You could use 1940 Ford deluxe trim rings, cap and beauty ring... **clic pic** 100_3581.JPG

Chrome rims and small '41caps are the cat's pajamas. Anyone have images of that?

i saw them, they just don't have that old time look to them.

there's also doubt about them fitting on a 40-48 ford wheel.

maybe if nothing else comes up
