HUBBA HUBBA my 32-4 Tudor tribute to Gramps

  1. You cannot/should not end an original tie rod. They are thin wall and the female thread version is split seam. If you need to bend a tie rod, get a piece of decent wall tube and a local machine shop can bend and or thread it. Or a hot rod shop.

The good news is I didn't bend one of my old style ball end tie rods. It was just a rusty F1 I believe that came with my PU's chassis.
PS, what's a Hot Rod Shop?

  3. If you look at the tie rod, it's probably split down the side. You could bend one over your knee...

  4. Something new. I didn't know that, thanks for the info!

Would a dropped tie rod end solve your issue? I seem to remember those existing

Thanks Chris, I thought about this and searched for tube most of yesterday and was bummed at the prices. I want to at least use the split clamp style for esthetics if I'm not using the early style from my late 40s build theme. Since I had this tired spilt one I thought I'd take a shot first. It would not bend easily by my knee, well not the way you would want it to drop sharply right after the threaded section. I left a old ball joint in it and the clamp on to keep it from distorting. But I just couldn't get it hot enough with map gas and no helper. I guessed this would happen but at least I tried. Side note I am already ashamed that a friend help me(shoddily at best) on my front bones and that was a waste of time so I most likely will not have a tie rod made for me. An example of this stubborn DYIness is I'm looking into building my own flow bench mostly for my PUs heads, if I can use it on this flatty all the better.

NostalgiaSids has these 1.5" drop tie rod ball joints.

This might be the way with a little chrome plating. $50 a pair.
    Thanks @Tim

Willys tie rod ends are dropped and fit. I dont know what year but 30-40's rings a bell.

Or any decent machine shop should be able to make you a dropped tie rod. I made mine out of 4140 HTSR bar and threaded it. I could use it to lift the truck up with a jack and not bend it.

Matt, do you know if Willys used the 7 degree taper? I can get a sick pair of NOS 37-39 of the auction site at a great price. They would look awesome! I've read about this before, I immediately recognized them once I started searching.

This is the type of Willys tie rod end I dig

The ones I wanted to get were gone when I came in from the garage. NOS seem to pull a really healthy price normally. Re pops just aren't interesting.
I'll pass the depressing time by finally drilling the pointless holes in my rear spreader bar then I can paint it and my tail light brackets. I say "pointless" cause I'm running the gas tank in the stock location as apposed to a true "Lakes" build. I can't give up the back seat space in a car built to haul the fam.

I'd be more curious of the shaft size than the taper. You can play with the taper in your arms but if they are to short or to thin to whatever, it's harder to work with.

    Drill away ;)

Not sure of the sizes on the willys ones. But anything is doable.

This stuff is still way off and a long way to go. Although it looks like ass, this is a huge step in calculations.

I might cut the posts and roof a little tomorrow and set it on there. I shouldn't be messing with the car at all right now cause I'm supposed to be doing some house stuff. Some of you know how it is though.

  29. Once you set that top on it's gonna make everyone realize your dream and what you have envisioned since the start of this thread. I'm happy for you Wyatt. Keep at it and soon enough you will be kicking on that starter shaft. Looks cool and I agree the back tires need to be bigger.
