Chassis done, getting ready to start on the body. I bought this car for my Dad for his retirement gift. He always dreamed of having one. Best feeling I've ever had was buying it for him. We just started working on the car and 4 months after he retired he past away. I didn't touch the car the a year after that. It's new name is Dad's Dream. I will end up handing it down to my son someday now. Hoping to get to share some good times with my family in it. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Car is sub framed with a nova sub, power disc brakes, new gm crate engine 350 turbo, nova 10 bolt rearend, The rear susp. set up is from no limit, 9 inches of air ride travel, low low, more to come soon.

I think I'd go with bigger tires, for a more period look.

Yep he did help too, I mean he should, it is his Merc now!!! We all need to help him stay on track to finish it!! Its on its way home to North Dakota on Friday so look for it! IM GOING TO SLEEP!!!! Somebody PM him and make sure he starts a build thread so we can tell him what hes doing wrong, he's a LURKER!!!!

Ether....There's a 51 here in Chicago that could use a chop. Have you seen the travel brochures for the Windy City? Maybe you should book a trip. The 51 rear window stays...

  14. I dig the pics, is that more chop than your car?

  15. Same chop but ended up, in my mind, a little better! Guess ya learn a few tricks as ya go!!!
Now Ive got a couple parts cars to rid of as well as a couple 51 back windows!!!

  16. Getting rid of a back seat? I'm in the market.

  17. Yep, I have a late 50s early 60s tbird rear seat and speaker deck. Its not the wraparound one. Plus tons of other merc parts. 2 parts cars left from my brothers build. a more door and a 2 door as well as 2 51 back windows and surrounds.

Finally installed the Merc body on the custom chassis for the first fitment check. Had to modify the under-the-rear-seat floor to fit the modified 4 link rear suspension.

My '57 Merc is currently on blocks in the middle of a dual exhaust with smithies installation. It's destined to be no other than a traditional mild kustom, and I am particularly intrigued by the few '57 Mercs that Watson was involved with during the great years.

It scares me whenever I see a car on concrete blocks. hopefully you are not getting underneath it without better support. I just had to say something, concrete blocks can break (almost explode) with weight on them,,,, when you least expect it and drop a car real quick. Stay safe, TomCat 1

I started on the suspension for my '55 Merc wagon.
When I pulled the drums the insides were empty. NO front brakes.
It might be time for disks!

Wow...I did not know that. I have not been underneath the car that much, only a few times. Right now that's all it is on, what would be a safer way to support it? I heard having it just on the jack is dangerous so I figured the concrete blocks were way safer. Just in the middle of a dual exhaust installation.

  26. Let me see......what's new?
#1 Got rid of that STUPID gas pedal! (that everyone seemed to like)
#2 Elec ignition (no more points!)
#3 Mech fuel pump (no more dying on the side of the road!)
#4 New (old) aircleaner, with cool air inlet hose (runs MUCH better)
#5 Raising the rear 1 1/2" this weekend (putting 2 leafs back on)
#6 Raising the front 1 1/2" real soon (new front springs)

I've put 400 miles on it since doing #1-4 and haven't had ANY trouble at all! Wish I would have done this years ago. I'm raising it up cause i'm tired of dragging and bottoming out all the time. I know it looks cool low,but as much as I drive my Merc,it's SOOOOO uncomfortable!

Well John, I too would like to spend some time with a window trim guy.
I did get the drivers door glass replaced, I didn't think it woud be as much ($210.00).

The rubber and channel around the windows are first priority, then I thought about undertaking the challenge of making my own SS trim around the windows.

I've possibly got the chance to get a Desoto grill from a member here and have considered putting in in place of the Chevy grill. I've always been a big fan of the original 49 grills and the Desoto grills.

I've spent many hours so far cleaning the white leather seats, they were almost mildewed or something to the affect of so dirty it was down in the leather and real bad in the stiching.
So I have become somewhat of a specialist on cleaning white leather interior.
After looking around on the net I found several good combinations of cleaners and ideas to use, but none of them give anywhere near the results that the last one did.
Nail Polish Remover without Acetone: this is by far the best clearner for the white leather. However, there are a few must things you need before getting started. 1. a way to ventilate very well 2. Be very generous with the fluid when applying. 3. Make sure you have a clean damp cloth to wipe away the dirt and grime that will be running off the leather.
    4. Afterwards, after everthing is dry the stiching will still be dirty, I used a good quality shoe polish to go over all the stitching.
Very little money and some elbow grease made my white seats look like new money.

    Hope this hellps someone

  30. I love white interiors in Mercs! Mine will be all white, red carpet, red seatbelts.
