Art & Inspiration How about a shift knob thread?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Moriarity, Nov 10, 2020.

  1. Ol-nobull gave you a couple of good ideas.
It looks like you have an unthreaded core but with a threaded set screw. What I have done in these cases is to round up a spacer to fill the gap between the shift lever size and the hole size in the knob. Simplest way is a 5/8" section of 1/2" rubber hose and crank the set screw in tight. (This can sometimes be a little loosey-goosey, though.) A tad better is a nylon or brass bushing from the hardware store but those are likely to be 1/2" and you say the hole is 1/2+, so you may need something custom, to size. Whatever spacer or bushing that you come up with, I recommend that you drill a 'dimple' where the set screw locks down.

Believe it or not, in the good ol', bad ol' days, it was common for auto store shift knobs to be sold with nothing but a rubber bushing to force shift knobs onto different threads of shift levers........

  2. That "knob" on the right side, center caught my eye. I actually made a couple of knobs from those little urns for the ashes of "the dear departed". Both buyers wanted to take Grandpa along for the ride whenever they cruised in the old guy's rod.

1964 The Bowers and Paris 440 Fiat Altered Coupe at Lions Dragstrip in Long Beach. Red Paris, driver.

    Hello,

Most powerful drag racing cars have a wide variety of shift/brake levers. Most seem to be a round ball. But in looking at this powerful supercharged Hemi motor in a small Altered Class Fiat, the builders went a step further to get an extra choice in place.
    upload_2020-11-17_4-8-21.png
Of the two levers inside the Fiat, it was minimalistic, but ready for the all out assault on the race at hand. A machine turned instrument panel, the requisite sponsor stickers, and the popular skull shift knobs. One of the skulls even has detailed “Fontanelles.” Fine details are always appreciated in quality builds.

Inside of the old Bowers and Paris 440 Fiat Altered (now owned by Jerry Rushing) looks rather business like. But, the standout skull shift knobs just put on a final touch to the race car interior working space. The photos were taken at the JUNE 2017 preview days and the initial, grand opening of the Lions Dragstrip Museum.

Like going to the old drive-in, car show set up days on Thursdays, the whole months of May/June was a flurry of activity to get the newly designed Lion’s Dragstrip Museum set up and open. Several of the race cars had already made their presence available in the huge empty warehouse. Perfect photo shoot location and detail work.

These were a great idea by Hurst.... if you never planned on using them! A6D426C8-A917-4491-A23F-F35C1185716E.jpeg

  17. When I was in the early stages of building the Ranch Wagon I toyed with the idea of making a utilitarian shiftier for the 5 speed transmission with a piece of steel rod bent to fit around the bench seat.

I ended up adapting/cutting up a old Hurst shiftier and using a generic 5 speed ball.

Can you guess what the prototype shiftier ball is? HRP
