History Hot Rod truck thread!

I think it is a reflection on the glass. If you look closely you can see the reflection on the door.

Having a ball with the 51 F1 I finished last month, parked it in front of the 1878 Southern Pacific Depot I helped restore - stock interior, frame boxed with X-member, IFS, disks, triangular 4-link, tank relocated to the rear.

When I first started my photography shootings, I saw this old Chevrolet pickup sitting in a store parking lot in Long Beach. As I parked near the colorful truck, the owner came out from the store. We struck up a conversation and he continued to tell me about his build. The color of the Chevy truck was close to the photo above. A close maroon/dark Tahitian red color was what drew my eyes from across the parking lot.

I mentioned that I would like to shoot some photos of his car and have him tell me about the build. Then, I would send him some color photos and a mounted b/w photo in a custom redwood frame that I built. He was all for that and offered to pay for an 8 x 10 color enlargement to be inside of the redwood frame, instead of a brown-tone antique finish photo.

Now, that was part of the business plan. Offer some free stuff, get the photos accepted by the magazines and then send the extra b/w photo prints with a few color slides for the customer’s own files.

It was my first attempt to get some quality photos, get in the darkroom for some experimental photo prints, and create a photo within a custom frame for their office or living room wall. Then the word would spread for future photo shoots and the custom photos would speak for themselves.

As I kept going down this driveway nearer to the Chevy pickup truck, the contrast of the white interior stood out and reminded me of my first photo shoot a long time ago. The memory had its ups and downs. At the time, I thought great color photographs, nice angles and a great presentation along with a nice story would be accepted as a magazine article.

The photos were not the problem as they were immaculate in the presentation back in the magazine offices. But, it was the topic of featuring a truck over a “hot rod” was the key bartering point. They wanted more hot rods, like roadsters, mainly. That was their emphasis at the time. Trucks and sedan deliveries were a second thought.

So, despite a great story, great photos and presentation, the bright Maroon/Dark Tahitian Red, Chevy Pick Up Truck never made it to the newsstands from the myriad of hot rod/custom magazines being published.

This recent photo of the maroon Chevy pick up truck getting some loving care brought flashbacks to the beginning of the whole photo shooting era for me.
