I always start out wanting to just build a driver, but eventually the performance starts creeping in and before you know it, it has a big lumpy cam and no street manners. I can't help it, no matter how hard I try.

So are you a guy that is ok with a junkyard motor, a stock crate engine or a lumpy cam guy?

In drive mine on the street and on trips. I want a well behaved engine that pulls an A.C. compressor at idle without problems and has enough power to smoke the tires just once and a while. I've slowed down a little in my old age.

  5. I always lean to more performance oriented engines, though I prefer to stick to factory based stuff. So 2.02 camel humps, Z/28 or L79 intakes, 097, 30/30, L79 cams. Though do like playing around with different intake carb setups. Run alot of dual quads, tri-powers and 6x2's

I know what your saying but performance is a big thing. I only plan on pulling a alternator, water pump, and A/C . IMG_20190126_113751654.jpg

Stock sucks. If you do it right, you can make lots of power and still be within a reasonable definition of traditional.

When I built my SBF for the old hotrod I researched the net and decided to have a custom ground roller cam.(I just love how that kinda rolls-of-the-tongue...roller cam)
Anyway I talked to the guy and said...."I have waited for nearly 50 years to build a hot rod and I durn sure want it to sound like a hot rod." He laughed and said 75% of the cams they grind are for guys who want the same thing!
You CAN have a snotty cam and still enjoy it in traffic. Sounds (and runs) like the old 375HP 327 in a 60's vet.
    I luv it!!!!

I am trying to grow up and run milder valvetrains. The motor I just built is a reasonable .507” lift and a little lumpy in the 240°s @ .050” for a flat tappet but it’s in a 512 CID mill so that should give good manners and tame some rumpetyness. It won’t pass a gas station or come close to the class of a 60s style multi carb setup

I'm trying to get more 'conservative' with engine 'tuning' lately...but have you ever had a nice-mannered cam about to go into a planned out engine with everything new, but that nice tame cam just WON'T plug into the #1 cam bearing???? -Like 2 similar magnets...Just won't start in there! Something's 'repelling' it...

  11. Most of you guys know what I am into and do. 406 CID, 471 pro built blower, 650 lift roller, heavy mods on the heads, light weight forged crank, etc, etc. And yes I drive on the street. WIN_20170423_12_34_39_Pro.jpg

Have had both. Like both. More to the milder side lately however. Lumpy sound is a must!

51165986_2004356086268529_5527216150779265024_n.jpg For a nice cruiser I prefer a mildly built big block for the torque, drivability and low maintenance.

My finances dictate a milder build, my instincts dream of more. What is stock anyways, after you add aftermarket intake, exhaust, and headers. Roller rockers, head work, there are still ways to squeeze more power out of a stock, or mildly cammed engine.

totally depends on the car. The blown hemi, and the blown 427, are a bit snotty. still streetable.

mostly the other ones get pretty mild cams, maybe 235 degrees at 050 or less.

Put me down for a lumpy cam with a side of compression.

  21. Mine has a manual transmission and a quick change rear so I can run it on the street without too much trouble. The big cam, pop up pistons might be unpleasant with an automatic trans. It's tame enough I can run 91-93 octane So I'm kinda in the middle between stock with a cam and "wild and crazy"

do not like the 3 options listed above - small block will provide plenty of performance, without need for a lumpy cam. just need to make sure that whoever does machining cleans heads/valves up real good, complete cam kit with matching springs/rockers, etc -good intake/carb/ignition - good flowing exhaust system - type of transmission and rear gears important to figure out what type of power at the rear that you will end up with - just don't go too cheap with whatever you do - or go all in with a 1,000 HP big block

Who wants a stockrod, I see no fun in that! I need to rattle the windows as I drive up the street. I really like setting off car alarm's!

E 85 no need for race gas on my 12.5 motor.

Your choices in the opinion poll leave a lot of area unexplored. I don't go the full race method but I don't build stock or cammed up stock either. I love "hot rod" engines, the use of the word "hot" though should signify more than a rake or painted flames or some louvers, it had better f'n scoot!

  27. Mine would be an around-towner. I want to be the first one to hit 45mph away from the light. Give me a baby cam salad with torque dressing on the side.

I have always been a hot rod type of person, I love the sound of a loopy motor, a cam that makes the motor sound like its giving off the (tim the tool man) uff uff uff....

I now have the 230 flathead 6 that I want to hot rod but leave the car stock, and really I can wait to hear the L-6 sounding like a bad mofo. old school hot rod originality.

I always tell myself, I want reliable and dependable, something I can cruise in and have no worries. I am one of those guys that actually drive my car to a lot of places. I want it to look cool at the same time. Trouble with that is I never seem to do that. I get to building a motor and that 17 year old kid inside of me takes over. So far I have been pretty lucky I guess in that all of my engines make the trips and even though they are far from stock they are serving me well.

As an example for my Model A I always wanted a early Hemi, finally found a builder and was keeping it pretty simple in the beginning but as always it just got out of hand. IMG_3019 (Medium).JPG
