Although not strictly a Hot Rod movie, Thunder Road is a very cool 5o's car film starring Robert Michum and a cast of hop-up up jobs. BTW Murph, perhaps you should check this out: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274
Loving You with Elvis Presley! The king drives around in a sweet little flathead roadster! It's the coolest bro!
lorodz threw some good ones out there. I dunno if you wanna go strictly hot rod, but Worlds Fastest Indian never gets old.
Born to Run. Great Drag Race movie!! Made in 1993 feature car was a 1970 Mustang. Tells the story of corrupt street racing. Has several awesome Hot Rods and Muscle cars!
Behind the green door,,if that ain't a hot rod movie I don't know what is! HRP A intro would be nice.
How 'bout 1956's "Hot Rod Girl" starring Chuck Connors of "The Rifleman" fame and Frank Gorshin who played The Joker on the "Batman" TV series.
Not sure if it's the same car or movie, but there's an Old's Gasser on ebay being described as a movie car. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Oldsmobile-1950-Oldsmobile-88-Street-Rod-Gasser-/330592318230?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4cf8d67316
i watched the deuce of spades today. not a great movie ( i did not turn it off so its not bad either.) but was cool to get a flash back to the 50s.. all the cars looked accurate from the photos iv seen of hotrods in the 50s.. levis, wing tip shoes no tats and the women sure looked cute how they dressed in the 50s, heh. the movie even had some well known hot roders in it getting there cameos. one thing tho from the pictures from the 50s. why did you guys roll your pant legs up? was it to show off your wing tip shoes?
how about "hot rod girl" not seen it, but youtube has the full movie for free in there movie section. here is a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZooXLCLFuss thinks ill check it out, im bored. chris.
This Line is is Pretty Cool but I know there are more ... This one is as CHEEEZY As it Gets .......... GONG !
Thunder Road and Two-Lane are the best, however I was recently turned on to the afore mentioned Chuck Conners movie Hot Rod Girl and it was a good one.
How 'bout 1958's "The Blob" starring Steve McQueen. You get hot rods and monsters in the same flick. Maybe 1967's "Hot Rods to Hell" starring Dana Andrews. Maybe 1964's "Bikini Beach" starring Frankie & Annette. It's got hot rods, surfers, and babes. Maybe 1964's "The Lively Set" with Doug McClure and Pamela Tiffin.
I still vote for Vanishing Point (the original version). I found my copy at a local Blockbuster that was going out of business for $7 bucks!
Murph, are you the owner or a partner? If you're shooting for the youth demographic and older hotrod crowd, I'd say "American Graffiti" followed by "The Giant Gila Monster." On one, well advertised bill, you have pushed several stimulating buttons: NOSTALGIA, HUMOR, HOT CARS, SCIENCE-FICTION and YOUTH. Never mind that it's a new generation. They'll (rightly) enjoy all that stuff! If you have decent security to see to an trouble-making element (a problem in recent years) and decent prices in the concession stand, you're on the right track.
If you're booking in a movie to a real honest to goodness ozoner, the question is how are you projecting to the screen? If you're still shooting it through a 35MM projector it limits your choices. Many people don't realize that just because you can buy it on DVD doesn't mean you can get a good print of it worth showing at a theater. Another thing to consider is that many of the cool films we all love were originally made for TV, Hot Rod is such an example. Also the cult favorite Moonshine Highway falls in this catagory. American Graffiti is a great film to show on the big big screen, but booking a print can be somewhat complicated. They have many guidelines about how they want their print handled. If you luck out and find a private copy to run, you have to still pay the film company their cut or face being punished later on by not getting new releases to show for your regular schedule. Right now we're dealing with the fact that we planned to show Hollywood Knights in a few weeks, but got a call that it was no longer available because someone let their equipment turn it into confetti. Bad? Yep, since at this time that old print (it was turning pink) was the only one they released to theaters for presentation.
