Features Hirohata Merc

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by goldenidolcustoms, Aug 15, 2021.

  1. I’ve never been turned away at a “non trad”show.
As far as I know trad cars are welcome.at the events I visit.
The low amount of young people are due to the goofy year restrictions that lasted about 2 decades longer than they should.
Since Goodguys increased the cutoff , I’ve seen more younger folks. Should be stopped entirely along with country of origin BS.

I’ve only attended one NSRA event. Sometime in the late 90s. I asked a guy where all the Mercs and customs were. He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language then tried to explain the 1948 cutoff. We just looked at each other with the same blank expression.
Never went to another one since. Not saying I won’t in the future and the rolling 30 year cutoff is better than how it was.

That seems cheap for builds today for that the amount of work.. It would cost at least half that to buy a new car to start with.

A new Mercury in 1951 cost about $2000. For $7000 you could buy a couple of Cadillacs.

Kurt has/had an incredible collection. I got to meet him in 2018 when I took the Hudson over to USA and he kindly gave us a tour of his collection back then. I saw him again at CCR in 2019,in fact drove with Kurt and Amy to Indianapolis and return home in the Cadillac Convertible. Kurt is now well into his 70's and it is a lot of work to look after all these cars. He is keeping a couple including the Barris Buick and the Barris 38 Coupe that was being restored at Mann's Restorations(it isn't in the list on Kustomrama below). He has no children so time to thin the herd. I haven't communicated with him for awhile but I believe several are gone.

For those seeking reliable information regarding this post, you should contact the owners via Instagram, or Wayne Carini & Ken Gross. Yes it will be auctioned by Mecum @ Kissimmee in January. Have a great day!

  10. January!
That’s a long time from now.
I will volunteer my shop and services to take care of it until then:):)

That's fine as I don't think it's a carved in stone guideline any more...but I like to shoot the breeze with membership especially about experiences around these wild rides of the yesteryear...a true survivor...again a revered classic with provenance...and this Thread regardless of mixed opinions is a celebration of greatness...

Just curious why this hasn't been sent to the Classifieds? Famous, yes, but still just another guy selling a car.

It's only open to the Membership I believe...is the Owner a Hamber? Regardless it's his decision to make as how to put it out so to speak...

I too am wondering if a pre-deal has already been made.
Would you want spend $500K buying the iconic Hirohata Merc from the private owner...and have only a few people know about it...OR...would you rather spend the $500K and have a million viewers/people know YOU bought it?

The rules in the classifieds require a set price, which is incongruent with the fact the car is going to auction. Especially since it could sell over reserve, whatever that price may be.

This is not about just another guy selling a car.
Do you see a for sale sign on it?
    Do you see a price?
It is about an upcoming event with a well known car "at auction".

That's a thought...but only problem is, I can't go to the auction in Kissimmee...I think there's still an arrest warrant for me in Florida (lewd behavior, spring break, 1981)
