Owned my 28 A roadster when I was in High School, still have it. 26 years now, I think its a keeper. :D

  2. Still have the 74 Duster I bought when I was 16. Wrecked my Escort GT driver (only 3 years old, mind you) the day before I bought the Duster, on the way home from my Grandmas with the cash. Needless to say my parents were a little pissed I didn't fix the 'scort.

The day I bought it, I started to strip it (great running /6 auto) to make a "big block drag car" out of it. But I was more interested in the girl I was dating (her dad let me keep it in his pole barn) at the time, then college came, I met my wife, 2 kids, blah blah blah.

After 15 years, it's finally in my own garage. Next summer...;)

Still have my 55.:D :D Bought it in April of 1977, when I was 14, paid $800 for it (paper route money). Graduated in 1981. Here's a pic from 1979.

I drove either my 55 Chevy Hardtop or my older bro's 67 Chevelle to HS. We still have both the cars, although neither have moved since probably 1990. Someday they might make it back on the road.

I drove my '34 Vicky to high school in 1962 when I was 17. I still own and drive the car regularly, although it's been continually updated throughout the years.
I run 2 different sets of wheels and tires as of 8-1-06.....

Here's some pics from after it was all redone, a few years ago.:D :D It's still the same basic car. Still has the same 283 (now bored to 301) same valve covers, air cleaner, Sun tach, SW gauges, Muncie 4 speed, and 4:56 rear. The engine was originally built for racing in about 1969. BTW, my best time at the strip was a 9:20 ET................in the 1/8 mile.:D :D :D

Well, no wonder you wrecked the Escort. At 3 years old, it had to be tough to reach the brake pedal.

Great topic and some cool cars. I still have first car, a 1972 Chevelle SS. Had it since 1988. My Dad still has his high school car also, 1931 Ford coupe.

I wasn't going to post this, but there have been others before me that showed pre-'65 cars, so what the hell-

My original high school ride (circa 1991) was a red '79 Cougar XR-7. I always loved this bodystyle, and despite being 20 years old, it proved to be cheap ($1000 bucks), and reliable enough for me to get to school and back with little trouble. I totalled it in a left-turn accident vs. a Caddy. I was heartbroken. I had just begun 'restoring' it in autobody class.

A few months later I found (thanks to Sixgunner) a repacement that I deemed almost too nice to drive. This one, needed no work whatsoever. It was from Arizona- not a spek of rust on it, even all the factory markings were still on it. It didn't even leak anything!

I showed it at a couple local car shows over the next 3 years. Had 65,000 miles. I drove it in the summer, stored it in the winter. It was my baby. In my senior year after graduation, I sold it- I think it had 67,000 miles. I needed the money, and with college it seemed impractical to keep.

Fast forward 10 years later, I stumble across a listing for a black '79 Cougar for sale in Westland on the Autotrader.com website. I do a reverse phone lookup on the number and it comes back to the guy I sold mine to. I went to look at it, more of a "how bad did it get?" kinda situation, but it was in better shape than I thought it would be so I bought it back for a fraciton of what I paid for it/sold it. It was still in "good" shape, and I drove it 20+ miles home... but it was not anywhere near the show-worthy stance it left me in. I have since spent close to what I originally sold it for ($4500) getting it back into the shape it was in when it left me. It now has 103,000 miles on it. There's a lot more to the story but since this board frowns upon anything pre '65, here's my chance to show my "other" car: :D

  12. I am also one of those that still has his HS car. My 68 GTO, has been mine for 26 years now since I was 16. Even more trivia, my dad bought the car new, so it is really like original owner almost, at least original family owned. The car still runs and looks OK, but needs paint and a new vinyl top. My parent's gave me the car for good as a college graduation present, even though i had been paying for everything on it and it was mine since 16.

It is essentially 100% stock original, only had the engine rebuilt (all stock parts) and has one 26 year old lacquer repaint job that has gone to shit. The car is like many of your stories, I will never sell it. The car not only brings back good memories, but I have had it for so long it is part of me.

Funny thing is that it just sits parked in my garage for 99.5% of the time, i relly need to get it out and drive it more. It averages about 250 miles a year, unless i drive it to some place farther away than local trips.

  13. I've had three cars now and i'm still in high school, traded my galaxie and got this badass plymouth:

Not a Hamber and not a car but this truck belongs to my son. Picture now 'bout as it was in 1976 when we built it. Imron paint still great. Started when he was 16 finished when he was 17. Been on the road ever since. Don't know if you can see the bowtie in the grille or not but is 350/350 equipped. Black tuck & roll. He is now 46.

  16. Damn,,,,some of you guys were rich when you were in HS. I drove a really old beat up 51 chevy babitt beater and was lucky to have it. Got married right out of HS and moved up to a really old beat up 54 Ford with a flathead with craked block. LOL,, had to put water in in it every 30 miles or so. Lucky that I worked close to home. After a year or two we moved up really high to a 57 Rambler wagon. I hated that car.

Doing much better these days though. Enjoy your week guys.

  17. Still have my 56 Olds powered 34 Ford I drove in HS in 58, Class of 58.
Last time I drove it was 62. Am going to resurrect it soon.

I wasn't going to post either since my high school car doesn't fall in the pre '65 - but - I've still got my 71 Mustang that my dad and I bought in '77 from the original owner. I was 14 at the time and my mom was really unhappy about this. My dad later told me that he helped me buy a "good" car because I was planning to spend my paper route money on a clapped out '56 F-100. He was worried that I'd kill myself and others driving the old truck since all of my paper route money was going toward purchase and there would be none left to actually maintain the thing.
My Mustang comes out once in a while still, I can't bear to tear into it yet. Maybe one of these days I'll get it going for real. Still has the 1980 Imron paint and looks essentially identical to high school days.
Normally if I see someone from high school, they ask if I still have the car. I wonder sometimes if I should sell it and use the money for tools or another car.... I'm not thinking that way today though. We must truly be birds of a feather judging from how many Hambers have kept their old rides - of whatever vintage and style.

I still have my first two cars. My first was a 15th birthday present. A decent '40 tudor that I immediately tore apart in 1982 and haven't put back together since. Never have driven it.

The second was a decent '67 Chevelle that we fixed and drove. All the other kids asked when I was gonna put "mags" (they meant Keystone Klassics) on it, then I put maroon Rallys with cop car caps on it. They said "it needs some 50's on the back", and I used 235/75R15's (nice and tall). They asked when I was gonna get air shocks and jack it up, and I lowered it about 4 inches all around. I could roll a pop bottle down the street with the front crossmember. They had no idea why I put holes (louvers) in the hood. They couldn't understand why I pulled the extra chrome off and filled the trunk lock. It got lots of use from 1983 to about '90, but has been stashed away in a chicken coop (for real) awaiting "some day".

Bought my '66 Plymouth in 1991 when I was 15, drove it for the first time on graduation day in '94, and still have it. It's a daily driver in the summer.

The only thing with wheels that I've had since way back when is my 1971 Motobecane Mirage 10 speed bicycle.
I bought it while still in College, not high school, but I graduated high school probably before some of you younger guys fathers were born...
The bike is still rideable and still has the original tape on the handlebars!
(It's been thru several sets of tires though, I bought it for transportation, not sport.)

  25. My dad and I started to build my coupe when I was about 7-8 years old (around 1971-72). It became mine when I turned 16.
The '57 was dad's Winter beater.

It got torched in a garage fire the year after I graduated... and sat for a number of years, while I stopped cryin'...

When I moved up to Cable, in '95, I hauled it along...
I started the revival about '97... and got it road-worthy about '99...

    Now, I just drive it...
...and, ya can't stop me...

My first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick. I paid $300 for it, and drove the hell out of it for 4 or 5 years. It was a really good car for a poor high school/college student. It was far from being a "keeper," though. :)

My sister-in-law bought a '67 Camaro RS in high school in the early 70s. She sold it to her dad when she got tired of it. He gave it to me at one point, and I have since given it back to him. He has spent a lot of money on it, and still has it. It still has the original stock 327 and poerglide.

My sister-in-law still enjoys a drive in it every now and then. I would post a pic of it, but my website seems to be down.

My high school cars are long gone...it was Chevelles, Novas, Pintos and Cougars for me up until I was about 20 and got into 4x4s...

The blue 69 Chevelle was my first car...it bounced around from owner to owner here for several long years after I sold it back in 85...last saw it in about 94, might still be lurking about...there's WAY too many 68/69 Chevelles around here to keep track of ONE!

The red 69 Cougar was a total rustbucket clunker...traded a $40 Pinto for it.

Strangely, of all these cars, the crappy old beat-up Cougar is the one I miss most...now that I got another 64 Oldsmobilr to replace 'Dyna'!

  28. My 68 GTO I mentioned in the prior post. I put redline tires on it now, it really looks like original with them vs those white letter tires.

I still got the 61 thunderbird I drove in HS. I tell every g/f I have that I am not gettin married without that car bein back on the road... Thats why its still in the back yard and I ain't married lol. I still got the 90 3.1 Firebird I got in HS too. I got the car for free. Got it runnin in the guys yard and drove the piss outa it for a year or so.. I stoped driving it because it looks terrible lol. ITs black with primer and bondo on the quarters, the fenders and nose are green and the hood is red lol. Still runs good with 287k on the 3.1.. I have had more fun in that car... Riding around with girls sittin on the roof with the T-top out....... I learned that slaming on the brakes before a curve on a dirt road is bad in that car.... hence the green parts lol. ITs had about 4 sets of fenders and 5 hoods on it. Damn dear, trees, hood flyin up.... Its wierd what cars you get attached to.
