So we're having some problems with a 301ci sbc race engine in our drag car. And Hotrod69 (gary) posted a thread asking for advice. Well we had a few people that didn't believe we had a motor that will turn 9000rpms. Well it will . I know for a fact as im the driver. But it got me to thinking about other high winders. So Im asking to here about all of y'all experiences with these types. How high have you taken one? How long did it last? I have a very good friend that was a motor mechanic back in the late 60s . He said he would build a customer a race engine for a 57 chevy gasser and that the guy would launch at 10k...... hard to believe but Paul is no lier ..... he did say the engines didn't last long and he made a lot of moola off the ol'boy.......lol
Do a search for Charlie Hill / Pork Zartman "filthy 40" Willys. 283 doing 9500 through the traps...in the early 60s
I had a 302 Chevy back about 73 in a Nova it would turn 10-12000 easy. 20 runs and it was time for rings and bearings.
what'd you guys do to the chevs other than small stroke big bore?? ive got a 301 i'm building just for that
the small stroke big bore is the only way to go for a long lived high rev motor. this one was first put togeather in 1962. it is a1957 block boared to 4"
My high school buddy's z28 would pull strong right to 8,000 w/ headers a cam. My old tune up guy's super stock camaro's 327 would go to 10,500 in the water box, but the valves all came apart at about 9,700 !!
You have to find a good machine shop that know what they are doing. Cause they will cut thru to the water jackets if they don't. Already found that out.
put a BIG CAM in my 301 on circle track broke er loose on a 1/2 mile front straight turned 8.5 ONCE took out 8 pistons never again attempted anything over 7500 then they all lived forever was one of those big bigger and biggest cams from a shop it was the biggest and would not idel below3K but it sure come on in the top end!!!think it took me about 2 years after that mishap to find a used 350 and get racing again
Maybe they'll believe you when they are in the other lane? A local engine builder was well known for his high winding 283 powered 57. I used have a picture of it yanking the wheels, I think only went 11's but it put on a show coming off the line. I have a fresh one in the classifieds in 10,000rpm range but it's a 720hp Gary Chomiski 290ci SBC. My little Ford is good for spinning too if it every gets out of the garage.
That's why I keep bringing this up every time someone wants to hog out a perfectly good 283 block out +.125"..
Well .... when they are already wore out and have 60 over slugs already in them what are u supposed to do with them? And I will say there ain't nutin' like pulling the trigger at 6500+!!!
So far we've had about 154 views on this thread and it seems we have a couple here that hate threads like this... Why don't you guys step in here and tell us why you hate this little combo.... Let me get the popcorn ready!
Why would someone hate a thread like this? I was just trying to start a conversation about takeing a motor to the limits. Not a pissing match on why u shouldn't. Just looking for personal stories and/ or tall tells......... that's all.
Don't get me wrong, I love threads like this.. It's the viewers that rated this thread as a lame one...
I got a Chrysler to turn fifty thousand RPM back in the early sixties. Can anyone top that? Charlie Stephens
Well ... in the last few years I scrapes out quit a few wore out 283 and the 327 are getting harder to find. They are getting to be 50 plus year old. For the record I have two std bore 283 and a 30 over one in the barn. Just waiting......
