Whats a 354 from a big truck worth? the water pump looks different and there isn't a cross over pipe from the heads or a place for one. The motor looks clean under the valve cover and it turns over freely
Some of you guys come up with funny numbers, or I am one lucky guy. I've bought several early hemis in the last few years, 331's, mostly. I've never gave more than a hundred bucks for one... Not trying to stir crap up, just stating facts.
I always assume a 331 goes for $500 a 354 goes for $900-1000 and a 392 goes for $2300-2500 for core rebuilders, sometimes a little more for a runner, and also a little more for adjustable rockers
yes the waterpump housing is different , the whole front assy is but can be changed using a 331 passenger car pump housing and cover , and theyre worth whatever someones willin to pay depending on condition
i have bought them for 100 bucks to. they made a lot of them they really are not all that rare. like anything else keep looking and be patient they turn up. the items that are worth money are blocks and cranks and bearings and after market cams. the rest like heads and rods water pumps etc are a penny a pound. you couldnt pay me to haul or store that heavy crap
Better to use a chevy water pump conversion for a hell of a lot les money than a 331 original water pump.
just sold one this week for 800, 331 new-yorker complete 4bbl ,not seized but need rebuild,i still have one for sale, same thing, i had 4 of them, they are rare around here.
Just bought a 1954 Imperial Wagon 331 hemi w/trans and 4 barrel carb, all original down to the plub wires and air cleaner, turns over. $600.00 and I am happy with that dollar amount. There still out their !!!!
I bought a 354 from a 58 Dodge bus a few years back. It's a 354 block, but the bore is the same as a 331. It's my understanding that Chrysler did this from a servicing/rebuild standpoint. I assume same crank & stroke, just a smaller bore.
Depending on the engine, the shiverlay conversion can be very expensive. A properly rebuilt pump will last 100K, not so sure that the new chinese crap will do that. Yes, we rebuild pumps and yes the 55-56 pump is very expensive due to a rapidly dwindling supply of the very special carbon seals but still less than all of the swap parts. The 51-54 331, Dodge and DeSoto pumps are less costly to rebuild. Correct assumption. MotherMopar made most truck engines as durable as possible, for the time, by keeping really fat cylinder walls. There is really no performance difference between a 331 truck engine and a 354 truck engine... .
I'm am not a Chrysler hemi guru like 73RR or George however, 750-800 for a rebuildable engine is a fare price. It's hard to tell without looking at it. The number I quote is what I would pay though. I prefer looking at engines in parts, so I can check out the internals and bores. Some people are more comfortable buying engines that turn over and were just pulled out of a vehicle. I see both sides but to each their own.
The motor was in a county truck. It runs good and is clean inside no sludge at all it has a standard so i can get the clutch and pressure plate and motor for 700.00 sounds like a good price from what I hear from you guys. thanks
