I decided not to run the Desoto Covers over the spark plug tubes because I can't find any that aren't all pitted to Hell. Plus, They look more racy using the 426 boots... I obtained a set of early covers from an old Fuel car that had the cover mounts cut off. Since I had access to 3 sets of 392 tubes, i decided to make mine rather than buy them.......... measured the od of the tubes and they were 1.250 and at the flange 1.435..... Since I had access to brass tube and it was easy to work with, I chucked it up in the lathe and bored the tube hole to 1.258
next I measured for the counter bore depth needed to get the top flange flush to the top of the ring, .150 deep... and the width needed for it to fit inside, 1.438
after that little bit of machining, I checked the inside dia. of the boots and determined that if I turned it down to 1.826 or a little smaller, the boots would go over them and have enough flex that they would fit tight and hold down the insulator as well.......
Since I counterbored .150 deep, OAL of the part only needed to be around 3/16, so I cut it off there. The rubber tube seal helps with the seat of the tube.......
Great tech man! Wish I could see the pics of the washer installed though... Does your camera have a "macro" setting on it? If so, take a couple more pics with it in that mode.
Here is the motor in the car ( It just went in today) with the tubes installed in the covers. I have trial fit every one and they all install and fit like the pic above....
