I'm looking to buy a 354ci Hemi for my 56 Chevy truck.
    Is a Hemi 354 lighter then a CBB 454?
It's for this HAMB unfriendly truck,[IMG]

No the 354 hemi weights 720 lbs and the bow tie 454 is 685 lbs. About 3 cases of beer different.

My ref says 354 is 697 & a 427 is 693. The hemi weight includes the OEM powersteering pump/generator (integral unit) cast iron intake, timing cover ect. Modern replacments can easily shave 50 bls. Put "hemi tech index" in search.

I think that 720 figure is for the 392, with the taller (heavier) deck height.

Hot Heads sez a 354 is lighter than an iron SBC if you put all their fancy aluminum stuff on it....

The only thing getting lighter with aluminium Hemi stuff is your wallet.

Put it in there, no big deal. You won't notice a diff. You'll be surprised. Lippy

bwahahahaah.... that right there is funny!

Some of the basic parts weights go like this: these are approximate numbers, so don't beat on me for missing a pound or three....

    354 block = 180 lbs
    392 block 200 lbs
    crank = 78 lbs
    empty head = 68 lbs
    354 intake = 43 lbs

I recently had the need to weigh some BB Chevy heads w/valves & springs....78 lbs each.

  13. Out of necessity I had to swap out the intake, timing case cover, and water pump on my DeSoto 291...with aluminum pieces. I figured I save about 7,000 pounds...or so it seemed...:D

  14. Actually an early Hemi is a Whale and a 426 is an Elephant.

Good catch, ajMopar. As yet I have not heard anybody hang a knick-name on the CURRENT generation of Hemis. So, I keep thinking it feels like a piece is missing from the Hemi picture (even if I'm temporarily OT -- sorry!). Still Hemi stuff, eh?

  16. A lot of people on this site really diss the new Hemi, but if you have ever driven one of Ma Mopars newer cars with one in it, you would be very impressed, especially when you figure out those cars weigh over 4200 lbs.

I guess we need to look for a name of a huge animal to start calling the new one.

    Ox?
    Bison?
    Moose?
    Rhino?

Nothing really doing it for me . . .

You give up 100 cubic inches. Save the hemi for something you can show off, not hide in a new truck.

On many of the 'other' forums, the Hemi engines are now known as Gen I, Gen II and Gen III...I think I prefer Gen I to whale...

  21. Sounds too small block chevyish to me!

Whale and Elephant have much more character than Gen I and Gen II :)

  23. That sounds about right; my valve & spring-equipped 354 heads weigh 74 lb. on the bathroom scale.

AJMoPar, RE Post #16, I drove one of the new Hemis when they first came out, in a full-size spanking-new Dodge pickup WITH duallies in back. I WAS AMAZED. Here, I thought ALL those years we WAITED, the NEW Hemi would be a Hemi in name ONLY -- NOT power. I WAS AMAZED.

Having seen the config of the combustion chambers, I would have to say they are not TRUE Hemis. But then, guys said THAT about the 426 'cause the heads don't sit on the black at a perfect 90-degree angle. In the end, it's all quibbling over details; POWER is what rules the day.
