Chuck called a few weeks ago, said his car was acting funny. Said it would crank hard after he drove it...like the battery was discharging....new battery, new voltage regulator....

So I took a trip over and tested a few things. Bypassed the voltage regulator, checked the raw output of the generator...it’s a 6V... output was 9-10 volts on the multi meter. Than we checked the voltage regulator, it too was charging the battery??? I notice there was no ground on the generator stud, so we added a ground wire from the stud to the base of the voltage regulator. Seems to be fine now,,,these old “rot rods” need good grounds,,,electricity is a funny thing.

pics,,,,some may recognize the car from the “hot rod magazine” thread

amazingly solid car for 88 years old, perfect amount of sun burn, rashes and the original Ford paint. This is a lifelong California car that’s been in Massachusetts for like 10 ish years now,,Chuck drives the F$@k out of it.

From the looks of the car I'd have to think that there enough corrosion on the engine and bolt on items that it was probably the issue. I've seen it both ways, too much corrosion or too much paint keeping things from making ideal ground contacts or ideal electrical contact all together.

I might be wrong, and normally am, but doesn’t a generator put out like 30 volts ?

6 volt generators put out a max of 6.9 volts.
I’d give my left nut for that crusty old Ford.
