HELP !! I HAVE A 1954 chevy pickup, I'M trying to find out for sure what year motor I HAVE!! I'VE ORDERED 3DIFFERENT WATER PUMPS NONE FIT!!! THE PULLEY IS PRESSED ON THE SHAFT. IT SHOULD BE A 235 ?? THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE DIST. ARE AS FOLLOWS--- F1012A FOLLOWED BY JH780108, ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Why don't they fit? Are they totally different in how they bolt to the block? No factory pumps had a pressed pulley after '54. There are three variations of early style pumps--'37-'40, '41-'52 (wide pulley for 1/2 inch belt), and '53-'54 (narrow pulley for 3/8 inch belt). The '55-'62 pumps are longer, use a bolt on pulley, and have a visible impeller, as opposed to the early pumps that have a flat steel plate screwed to the rear of the pump that covers the impeller.
I'm pretty sure that JH780108 serial number identifies it as a 1951 engine. That's the only year engine numbers began with a J. It'll be a 216 unless it came from a one-ton or larger truck, which would have a 235.

The 2 pumps i ordered came in and had 5 bolt hole, the other one with the pressed on pulley was the wrong bolt pattern

The pumpon the truck now has 4 bolt patter, the lower left bolt is behind the pulley, i don't see how this one can be loosened without damage to the pulley itself!
The illustrations on rockauto.com show the '54 and earlier six-cylinder water pumps to have a four-bolt pattern with the upper bolts spaced slightly above the lower bolts and spread wider than the lower bolts. Additionally, the impeller is enclosed. Apparently there was a design change with the '55 235. Its water pump shows to still have a four bolt pattern, but the bolts are spaced equally around a round boss. The impeller is exposed. I've attached a photo example of a '51 216 engine number.
