yes, the landowner is a little different. his land his rules. i will respect his wishes.

  3. Somebody local to you should have an axle you could borrow or buy....only need a couple attaching bolts and break/cut the drum on the other side. If the landowner still balks at making drag marks on his property with stuck rear end, cut the splined ends off both axle shafts and the car will roll easily.

I normally jack the car at put a plank underneath the car put rollers underneath the plank and pull it onto the trailer. And by rollers I mean firewood, aluminum or steel tubing, anything round ,but it only works on a trailer.

"been awhile here is what i am dealing with . missing axle on driver side rear. locked in gear. rear brake stuck on pass. side. lucky i got the front two wheels to move . been sitting since 1966 in the dirt. 1/8 mile in the brush, small path that has a curve. any ideas?"

This one is a cinch. Tie the steering wheel to the door post with rope so the steering can't turn. Lift up the back of the car with the tractor drawbar and tow it out backwards. You will need to rig up some kind of rope lift or nylon strap to avoid damaging the back bumper, or use an old tire. If you don't care about the bumper just chain it.

if you can't figure out how to move a disabled car onto a trailer how will you ever figure out how to get it all together and running once you get it home??

  11. I would make a temporary rear axle out of wood. Get a 6"x6" x 8' piece of timber and place it under the rear axle. For rear wheels, buy cheap/junk front hubs and secure them to the wood via an appropriate sized Lag screw (you will have to drill a pilot hole) with washers so they will spin free - Something like a 3/4" x 8" should work. Bolt on the roller wheels to the hub and away you go. The rollers could be mounted under the fender wells, or outboard of the car depending. You must secure the wooden axle front and rear, both sides with ratchet straps secured to the car frame so the axle doesnt shift or roll over itself. This will also work for loading onto the trailer.

  13. The only car I ever had to move that we couldn't get a trailer to and wouldn't roll, we picked up with a helicopter!
Hired one of the companies that specializes in putting Big Ass air conditioning systems on the roof of buildings - they came with a big old Sikorsky. They had two guys on the ground, they ran two straps under the car and had it in the air and out to the highway and on our trailer in under 10 minutes :D

i am going with 2 old axles and just pull the stuck one. easy to do since one side is pulled out already. slide them in and go. with wheels of course.
this thread was to help people get different ideas on how to get projects home. making cars mobile when they are not.
i am smart enough to get this car. just trying to please the owner and keep his land from being tore up. his old tractor won't pick the car up. i am planning to use it just to pull car out then load it.
let's get back to making cars mobile when they don't have wheels or stuck brakes.

I haul cars like this on a regular basis, my winch will generally pull anything up the ramps, even with stuck drums, but for the stubborn ones, or cars missing rear axles or suspension components, I have a couple small trailer axles that are cut in the centers, with temporary [donut] spares mounted on the hubs.

I jack the car up, and position one half axle per side, and join them together with a section of pipe or cut driveline that slides over the axle ends. A chain will keep this temporary axle in place until the car is loaded on the trailer. One thing, if the car is a late fifties to late sixties barge, and your trailer is narrow, this may not work as easily. I try to judge the width of the car ahead of time, in order to bring the proper equipment for the job ahead of time.

John moves some cars and has for a long time.

If you really want to DESIGN and MAKE something, how about fabbing up a trailer axle stub with slotted flange for bolting to the outside of a stuck drum. Hub and wheel would roll independent of drum.

I was actually thinking about keeping a mobile home axle with tires on it for such situations. I think most of them are about 7 feet wide in between the tires. Jack the car up and tie the axle under it. If the axle I have isn't wide enough, some time in my will fix that...My Dad once moved a building with spindles welded to pipes with a log for an axle tube. Seems like it was sixteen feet wide

Sorry for the delay , I would still like to make something like this but the car I had to move was not a problem ,
I was told it was stuck in gear in the 70s when it was parked , I jacked it up and wacked the drum and backing plate with a ballpean hammer ,
Then I took an old bumper jack and pushed down the clutch pedal so it "might" freewheel ,
The drums broke free easily and when we winched it back it started rolling !
so after sitting 30 plus years it pulled on the trailer with no real problems ,
when we got it home , jacked it up and un adjusted the brakes as far as we could so it would roll easier and pushed it off the trailer ,
After looking it over it seems it was only the shift coupler that had fallen off with it in gear and that is why he thought the trans was bad......

so has anyone else made one of these wheels or anything else like it ?

Thanks for all your ideas, sometimes you plan for the worst and it turns out to be easy :)
