I believe the gears are stock. From what I gather they are 3.70s. If I were to change the gears to 3:55s would an overdrive be necessary?

If you go from 3:73 to 3:55, you are going in the direction of what an overdrive would do: reducing rpm at any given speed. I would think 3:55 would be about perfect with the 261. You sure don't need 4:11s. You would loose a little jump off the line, but pick up an easier cruising rpm on the highway. Where will you drive the majority of the time?

Mostly freeway but occasionally city driving. That might be the easiest and best route. Change the gears and keep the torque tube. Slide in a 261.

When I upgraded my car I toyed with the I6/V8 decision and ended up putting in a 292 I6. I wish I put in the v8. I'd go with the 283.

:) one of the fun times in my old 350 powered 49 sedan was passing an AD truck, and two 53-54 Chevys coming back from Paso Robles doing 60 MPH while I was doing 85 :) I like V8's in mine.
