"My goal is to build a motor for my 48 Chevy rat rod"

1st rule of the HAMB, Do NOT build a rat rod and don't talk about them here

    A sbc is a sbc be it a 327 a 383 or a 350

Me personally I would go with the 327

Im not sure what your looking for, Or what you expect.
But, asuming you "could build SBC's in your sleep...WHY are you asking your engineer buddy whos never built an engine for advice? Just seems odd to me.
I think you need to read up a bit more on this stuff before asking the universe to colectively help pick YOUR dream motor.

and like it was said a SBC is an SBC be it a 283 or a 400, Don't let the "Ohh go i need to be different" syndrome stop you. In my book, More cubes the better.

Plus roundy round motors turn like 8k all night.

There are so many resources available online on how to build an SBC for every specific scenario, why should we beat a dead horse on here?...set yourself some guidelines first as to what you want from the motor (ie: how will it be driven, hp and torque amount wanted, budget, mileage/longevity wanted, etc) and then search around online for what other builders do to meet those characteristics...Hot Rod magazine has probably ran dozens of SBC building articles over the years for different purposes...we're not really here for vague rat rod/resto mod conversations...if you have specific questions, we'll help, but this topic is way too vague to be answered without you finding your own answers...sorry...

nice going guys...keep being mean to the young rat rodders and drive them away, and we won't have anyone to carry on this traditional stuff when we are all dead...
