anyone know of a rear end that will bolt into place (or even one i would have to put new leaf spring pads on) into a '64 galaxie 500 convertible and be 1.5-2" narrower on each side?

there has to be a 8 or 9" rear end that works and is narrower.. im sure someone knows from the racing days of tryin to fit bigger tires in there

I know i could narrow it but looking for a cheap option

    HELP!

    thanks guys

ps - no need for handling huge power.. stock 289 and i drive slow

the measurement is wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface...outside to outside.

ok, so outside of drum to outside of drum.. (sorry, im dumb with this shit)

an 8" would be cheap and fine with what i use it for.. and would have a nice long gear too for the freeway.. hmmm...

the maverick or granada would give you a near bolt in. then you may need to deal with wheelwell depth..do you have room to move it in that much??

and yes outside drum to drum.

im lookin to go from 3.5" backspaced 7" wide wheels (gettin tight with those) to 2" backspace 7" wheels...

my thinking is i end up with the tire in the same place, only different being backspacing of the wheel...

just realized i wasnt adding for both sides.. so to drop 3" overall i need to be at 58", or bronco/early mustang area...

    hmmm

    somethin like this maybe

    http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/1504966864.html

but with bronco rear, im lookin at higher ratio i would assume from factory.. im spinning smaller tires, so that wouldnt be good... i would have to change out the gears..

it seems to all come back to me narrowing my rear end?

Notes on the early Bronco rears:
-yes 58" wheel mount to wheel mount is correct
-original ratio was either 3.50 or 4.11 and quite a few were limited slips
    - could be either 10" brake/small bearing OR 11" brake/large bearing depending on GVWR specified.

BUT-these are a centered pumpkin housing therefore the pinion is offset to pass side
    -bolt circle is 5 on 5 1/2"

The narrowest car axle is the Maverk 8" at 56.25" wheel mount to wheel mount, make sure its a 5 lugger, the ratio will be either 2.79 or 3.00, thats all they had.

The narrowest 9" are the 57-59 Fords and the 65-66 Mustang each at 57.25" wm to wm. The stang housings are spendy. The 57 to 59 Ford rears are all the same wm to wm width. The ranchero and wagon housings used the large (early) wheel bearng and, I believe, bigger brakes so the brake offset may vary if you're trying to measure empty housings.

yeah i wanna stay 4.5" pattern.. unless i can just swap my galaxie backing plates and brakes onto the new rear? that would save some money too...

bronco sounds perfect, but would need the lowest ratio out there.. 4.11s and my tiny tires and id be turnin 6000 rpm on the freeway LOL

    thanks everyone

Try a Ranger rear axle, out of a 4x4, ugly axles but they can have limited slip (look for an "L" on the tag) and decent ratios. 3.73 or 4.10 (also on the tag) and they're pretty cheap, plentiful and plenty rugged, 4 1/2 bolt pattern

    I have a 3.73 in my 38 Plymouth, stock motor, s10 5 spd...

..I can't rememebr the width (DOUBLE DUH!) but it's narrow, I had to put spacers so the tires wouldn't rub the wheelwells when the axle rode over a diagonal bump! (you should be able to find the width in here someplace, There a few articles in here about it)

  20. 57-59 Ford full size passenger cars are all the same width but wagons and Ranchero,s had the large bearings.Got one in my Belair. They are one of the narrowest 9 inches with the 4.5 bolt pattern.

  21. if you went bronco you could swap the gearset out ov the one thats in the car now. if the spline count is the same
