Depending on the year and application, you could have a Saginaw 3-speed, or a Muncie HD 3 speed, and both of them could have a 5 bolt pattern to bolt to the bell-housing. A Saginaw will have 3 bolts across the top of the side cover, the Muncie HD will have only 2. You can go to that auction site we all know and love, and use it as a sort of Hollanders manual, see what each of those transmissions looks like, etc, etc, etc. I'm guessing your transmission is a Saginaw, but keep your fingers crossed it's the Muncie. 2. Muncie three on the tree Oct. 15th, 1973 Muncie 5 bolt pattern main case number upside down #(6273262) and side cover # (3952646) tailhousing # (3968035) is for trucks with center retainer (double drive shaft) my guess is that,s why you find them with the fifth ear! 3. The SM stands for Synchro-Mesh 330 It was the only 3 speed with the same bearing front and rear. This transmission was found in performance applications
