I watched the October Sky movie folks fuck up my friends Merc. I was there, making minimum wage as an extra, getting a much deserved break from years running my bike shop. This wasn't a cheap low budget production, it was a major money burning extravaganza, but nobody on the crew gave a fuck about any of the vintage cars used, and it showed.
Read all the other threads. I personally wouldn't rent them a parts car.

I have had a " Mixed Bag " of experiences from over the years going back to Houston where I was approached by the movie company that did Places in the Heart .

I was a stand by mechanic for several of the owners of cars in the movie Love Field shot in Richmond Virginia . A couple of cars had glass damage from a shoot at Richmond Virginia's airport on a scene shot there . The movie was reluctant to cough up repair money even though there was clearly a written agreement .

Pretty much the same can be said of a commercial where I reluctantly lent my personal 53 Ford delivery to a bank commercial . The ignition was damaged and they used " Dirty gasoline " and that resulted in having to drop the tank and re build the entire fuel system and to add insult , the truck also was scratched and dented as they CARELESSLY loaded the truck on an OPEN trailer .

Anymore , I only do "Prop work". By that, I helped with supplying lighting and pieces . That would have included the Lincoln movie that was shot here just last year .

There have been quite a few movies shot in Port Hope Ontario. It has the best preserved Victorian main street of any small town in the country and it has stood in for many locales in the US and Canada.

Some years back I rented an old Dodge pickup truck to a movie company. I got $250 and a tank of gas for one night's work. The truck was used in 1 scene that lasted about 10 seconds in the movie. There were also some really nice muscle cars belonging to locals.

I can confirm that they regard your car as a prop, something to be used that is of no importance compared to getting the shot on film. In other words they will treat it like someone who knows nothing about cars would treat any rental. Maybe worse, after all it's not like it's a new car.

I had my car in the movie IQ and it got damaged. I was reimbursed, but it still was a hassle. They treat the cars like any other props, so they aren't careful with them. I wouldn't do it again.

Going by my experience and what I read here I will say the Canadian film crews seem to be more careful and respectful than in the US.

Also smarter. Here, if they want to film a "British" scene with right hand drive cars, they use ordinary left hand drive cars and reverse the negative.

This means they must make up license plates, road signs, shop signs etc in mirror image so they will come out the right way around. But this is no extra work as they have to make up their own signage to set the scene anyway.

I was just thinking of the script change that was made during production that is not covered in the original contract - and the car exploded on the last down-beat.

I let'em use my 1946 Harley for a movie. Steve McQueens son Chad rode it.

I have a positive note about this industry. When my Comet got rear-ended (not related to filming), the insurance company only wanted to give me a pittance to scrap the car. After weeks and weeks of letters, phone calls, and appraisals in my favor; I finally had to threaten to sue them. To add urgency to my claim, I was able to document that the going rate to rent a '63 Comet convertible was $650/day (for film studio use). When I told them, my claim was going to start going up by $650 a day, they cut me a check, which saved the car from oblivion.

I rented my car to a music video shoot here in Austin just a few weeks ago. At first it was going to be just 2 hours, but they loved the car so much they found other ways to use it, and it turned into 2 long nights. The crew was VERY gracious and respectful, asked me before they did anything, and were a great pleasure to deal with. Based on my experience, I told them I'd gladly do it again.

All I can say is don't do it. Well it depends on if you want a claim to fame and a ruined car or if its just parked in a spot the whole time.....

My uncle, the original owner of his 1966 GTO convertible, did it. He took his car back because they where to rough on it..... My uncle ( conservative yet fun ) drove his car. Ordered the HIPO engine / driveline, and I have fond memories of him doin doughnuts and smoking the tires, when I was growing up me in the passenger seat. If he said they where to rough, I cant imagine what they where doin to it.....

Having been a 'car-coordinator' for a production company, let me be the first to say that a lot of the horror stories in the previous posts came about because, 'yes', when a production company rents, or leases a vehicle, it does become a prop. No doubt about it. But, for the most part, crew members are concerned about how it is treated. Damages cost the production, even if the insurance company pays. Insurance is necessary to shoot a legitimate movie. Producers with bad track records pay higher premiums, or have trouble getting insurance. So, someone screws up, they may not work on the next show. That said, what happens is about the same as when you lend someone your car. Unless you're in the car with them, you have no control over what happens to it. My advice: your contract should spell out in writing what happens 'in case of damage, or destruction'. And, fuggitabout anything not in writing. In the movie business, 'A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on'. Make sure by demanding to 'hang around' while your baby is being used. The possibility of getting a walk-on part, or being 'background', is well worth the hassle, even if being on a movie set can be worse than waiting in a dentist's office. The shining light will be getting to know some very cool people, and possibly networking another job down the road; as well as having free food and beverage, at craft services. So don't shy away from the idea of renting, or leasing your rides; unless, of course, they're in the 'too nice to drive' category. Of course, there is also another story movie people like to tell. A production company wanted to rent a mansion full of beautiful and quite expensive furnishings. The owner, a dowdy old lady, asked if everything would be just as it was after they were finished. "Of course it will", the production manager told her, reassuringly; and so the old lady signed the contract. The film crew set up the lights for the shot, and as she started out the front door there was a booming voice that said, "Release the lions!"

I rented mine out for a photo shoot for a new line of jeans and shoes.
    Worked out fine for me.
Had a contract, I moved it to the different locations they wanted the models to pose at.
Had in the contract that I was with it all the time and went over the car it when finished to insure no damage.
Best part was getting to watch the models change into new outfits, they have no shame at all.
Hell when it was all said and done I would have paid them to be part of it.

I took my stock 28 Buick to Union Station for the movie Seabiscuit. When I go there they said give us your keys and go to wardrobe. When I got back someone had moved my car 1/2 mile away. Who knows what lowly studio grunt moved my car and probably didn't know how to double clutch. It rained that day and a friend was trying to dry out his distributor. When he got back someone had tryed to plug everything back in and get it running. He was pissed! My scene never made it into the movie. I got about $250 which included a few bucks for driving and a few bucks for getting my hair cut. It took a month to get paid because the car agent was too cheap to pay me until she got paid. If I ever do that again, NOBODY drives my car and I get paid up front.

There was a production agent that asked me if he could rent my F100...I asked what they were filming, some more Vampire stuff?
He just acted all Hollywood, (was wearing his coat like a cape, arms not in the sleeves... I was amused)
Told him 'Sorry, but don't need it in the movies...Everybody that sees it asks if it's the one Stallone drove in the 'Expendables'!
People think my '66 VW's Herbie. Morons...

  21. I think they must have contacted everyone in the area that has an old car... I got an email asking if I would allow them to use my cars in a music videa too...if they don't wreck your car it might be some good money? Topless in New Mexico

I rented my 59 Elky out for a Diamond Rio video, I insisted I be there and I drive it. Other then like others said it being a long day it went well, I was well paid and the scenery was nice ( hot young ladies). I would hate to think what would of happened if I hadn't been there thou judging from what they wanted to do that I was able to prevent. They wanted my car dirty (could of told me since I washed it the night before at 30 degrees) so they wanted me to follow a guy down a dirt road while he spun his tires to get dirt on it! They also had planned on having an actress to crawl up on the hood while she "washed" it, I got them to change to getting in the bed. I say go for it if you want to try it, just make sure they ARE responsible for damages and you get to be there.

When we go out for traveling for some days we used to rent RV's. We have one Winnebago and its very useful for my videography and photographic adventure when we go out.

  28. I would say no just based on the fact it is Hip Hop, Rap Shit!

  29. There is a video out there some where of me getting a fork lift stuck in the mud and then getting a bigger fork lift stuck trying to get the small one out. The plot thickened when we had to get the zoom boom. The crowd loved it, some even brought pop corn. I was on the clock obviously so I was definitely getting paid.

  30. I know a guy with 4 or 5 old cars, he belongs to some screen guild that rents out cars for movies, he always seems to be busy and works in the NYC area.

A car buddy of mine down the street, his '49 Oldsmobile was used in the Goodfellas scene where they are selling cigarettes out of the trunk. He says he did well with it and it was only a day. Other old cars there, the production crew wanted to spray the cars down with something to take the shiny off them. Some of the guys opted out. My buddy's Olds was not a shiny car at all.
