Merry Christmas to you all....
"You Lot"... haven't heard that one regularly on this side of the ocean, except on a European movie or show. It is kind of like "Y'all" or, for the politically correct, "You All." Nice...
This is as close to a hot rodding Christmas story that comes to mind. This story is one that I remember and will keep with me, forever. It was possibly the best Christmas, ever. Over this long family history, there have been plenty of Christmas mornings that I can remember. It was the start of my experience of toys, car models, bicycles, go karts and hot rods. Actually, just about anything that moved, played a fun history for me, helping me get into the hot rod stages, later.
We had very little, lived in a dinky trailer, our bed was the dining room table converted to a small bed area for two young boys, and it was our first home in Long Beach,CA. Privacy for my parents? Just 12-15 feet away was their own small bedroom that was filled up with a double bed. (These days, this tiny trailer would be used for trailer camping, not permanent living.)
The time was December,1947. We had been living in this tiny trailer since moving to Long Beach in 1946. My mom always told me that the trailer was so much better than where they used to live earlier in 1944-46. The Long Beach area was chosen because my dad grew up in San Pedro and Terminal Island, just a short distance away. A lot of his family and friends lived in Long Beach during this time. Most of them lived in this huge trailer park built by the government for the aircraft industry workers.
It was a time of running outside and playing all day everywhere in the community. No need for adult supervision back then, the whole time period and area was made up of families, with no bad people that we knew of in our location. Every kid had a tricycle or bicycle and little old me, had to walk or run along to keep up. My brother did not mind as he was “hyper” and kept up with the others by walking fast or running alongside. I was usually left behind, bringing up the rear, on a casual walking stride.
It was a fun time for someone that did not know there was a "big world" outside of this huge trailer park and our tiny trailer. This is a "growing up in the late 1940's episode.
