Every time I see the name Joie Chitwood I have an immediate "return to my 60's childhood moment". The old guy that lived directly across the street from us was named Chitwood (always called him Mr. Chipwood), he owned a 1956 Chevy four door hardtop and my mom and I rode in it often going to the grocery store with him. We never had a car and I thought that thing was the coolest, really surprises me that my first car wasn't a 56.
As someone who has great respect for the United States military it’s not a bad idea to celebrate their sacrifices on this day.
I first saw the Joie Chitwood thrill show when I was 10 years old in 1961. He was friends with our local Chevy dealer and came to our fair every year for a long time. I remember that us kids would build ramps out of whatever we could find and jump our bikes on them.
Mid-State Speedway (Morris NY) July 4 1960 flagger Don Phoenix hands Gene Cole the (in the Willy Wust number 43 Modified) to pace the track as the National Anthem plays.
While I love America and all it stands for…my dog Hank and his kitty cat siblings (Fishy, Phantom, Frankie and Johnny) hate it.
Ryan, you continue to remind me of how awesome my childhood was with your insiteful and timely postings. Saturday afternoons and The Wide World of Sports featuring Joie Chitwoods stunt driving. Fantastic!
