    Hello,

Despite the massive horsepower coming from the motor in the SWC Swindler 2, they selected a large pair of M&H slicks, but not the largest that would have stuck out several more inches. For the times, it was the right amount to harness the horsepower and get the traction needed for the consistent wins in the supercharged Gas Coupe Classes.

At this stage of the game, the SWC had been upgraded to a different grille, but the original custom bar grille is still around, preserved for eternity.

As the horsepower races came into play, the tires got larger, requiring a bigger wheel radius cut. Now, those M&H slicks did stick out more than the earlier race car version.

This is a really neat car. I've always thought this was a great pic.

    Good morning,

One of the best ever. Early photos look to be taken in a cul-de-sac, bet that area has changed a bit!

Well, to be honest, I have not read all 409 posts. But, for many years-likely up to about 2010- it was illegal in Pennsylvania to have tires extend beyond a vertical dropped from the fender edge. I spent a lot of time mocking up wheels and tires and looking for the widest tire I could find, only to have the rule changed just after I spent my money.
Curiously, the car pictured on the PA Street Rod license plate had tires expending beyond the fenders and was, therefore, illegal.

ONLY IF he drove it with those tires on the street. Very easy to have another set of wheels and tires to swap when leaving the track just like most of us did in the good old days.

Lion’s Dragstrip Grand Opening in 2017 at the Price Transfer Automobilia displays.

    Hello,

Having built our own version of a “Street Legal Gas Coupe” for competition with our 1940 Willys, every time we see another local So Cal version, always becomes impressive. The choice of our final color was between a yellow for my brother and silver for me. He wanted to paint the yellow on whatever station wagon we were going to get for our cross country road trip to the Detroit U.S. Nationals in September of 1960.

The possible future finished 1940 Willys Coupe Yellow (my brother’s choice) OR Silver Pearl, my choice, both with black upholstery and all future add-ons we had on order in August 1960. In the end, a nice looking, finished, painted project is important. It is just the road to get there that is the difference.

The final build for us had our original Bruce Slicks inside of the rear stock wheel opening on the Willys. Those Bruce Slicks were able to be interchanged with the 58 Impala rear wheel openings, too. They started on the 58 Impala and then as our first version of the Willys was made, fit inside of the rear wheel opening.

But, if my brother had his way in choice of colors, (yellow) our next set of rear slicks, that were ready for pickup in Los Angeles, would have required us to radius the arch opening and those larger M&H slicks would be hanging in the wind. Much like the 1941 yellow Willys Coupe above. With more power comes the need for more grip.
