Projects Had anyone converted a vacuum carb to double pumper?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CokeandSmoke, Mar 22, 2018.

  1. As I recall with the double pumper I had years ago, there was an up-sized, large capacity accelerator pump. So you may want to add that to your parts list.

I really want that eelco gear drive kit. Maybe try it out maybe just let the carb sit on my coffe table as a conversation piece lol

I still have a 4160 in a box that I modified w/ a kit in late 60's......exactly like Dueces picture. Drilled 2 holes in
choke body, removed choke and installed the plastic gear drives. One of my throttle shafts was slightly bent,
so it had a slight bind. 50 years ago it was suppose to give crisper throttle response, but I can't recall now.

aed-5585_xl.jpg .... You could be a little smarter and purchase a secondary quick spring change kit for just about any of the 4160 carbs....
Start with the lightest spring and take the car/truck out for a thrashing... If it bogs when you put your barefoot into it, stop and go with the next heaviest spring... And so on till you get it right....
You could even change those while the motor is still running...

As I remember it, when I put the gear drive and squirters on my friends big block Vette his gas milage dropped to about nothing. He ran it for about 2 weeks and then had me take it off. Even at 36 cents a gallon for ethyl he couldn't afford to run the car with the carb mods.

That is per 10 pump shots, 5cc or 3cc per shot...not all in one shot like you stated.

Ordered both of those kits today along with a secondary metering block conversion to build a 3310.
I have a good core and am going to run it on my small block Ford. I am cutting the choke horn off also.
I also got some jet extensions and notched float. I figure I can be into a full race carb for under $ 200.
I already had the rebuild kit and some other parts if it worked on my big block Chevy in super stock , should be plenty for my 308 Ford on my 4 speed Gasser project.

I remember years ago one the truck pulling classes said you had to have a vacuum secondary carb, I used to take a doublepumper throttle body and drill a passage straight thru to join the squirters, then block the supply hole on the secondary side so that both squirters were fed from the front pump, I had a special 75cc pump for the front, then make the throttle linkage 1:1 and hang a vacuum pot for the rear that wasn't connected to anything (the rules didn't say the vacuum pot had to be connected, it just had to look like it was). You could always tell which trucks had my carbs, when they hammered the throttle it sounded like they just hit a nitrous button.
It took a while for them to figure out what I'd done, my carbs were the top 3 trucks and the next year they let everybody use a doublepumper.

While I'm in here anyway, I'll mention that when I bolted on an 850 DP I also had a 488 rear gear. So add that to the anti-bog list.

Double pumpers do not make a good street carb Why did they make double pumpers? As a band aid because the engine can't use that much carburetor yet It needs to get the RPM up for that much cfm. A good working vacuum secondary will supply the air as needed. I remember the Chrysler thermo quads on the late 70s they were jetted lean for emissions and guys would adjust the secondary air valves to come in quicker turning it into a theromo bog.

I guess he didn't have any more haywire projects worthy of our criticism.

    ..... on another note, I have a rare List-4223 850 center squirter carb and I'm trying to figure out what those were used on.... Here some pics I found online.... s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154935.632.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154202.150.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154145.599.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154120.010.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154100.669.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154040.955.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154021.078.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T154005.708.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153935.773.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153910.305.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153846.855.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153840.098.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153830.582.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153402.990.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153349.260.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153323.364.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153307.672.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153259.548.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153242.894.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153233.059.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153223.778.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153213.076.jpg s-l400 - 2023-06-03T153201.296.jpg

I guess your 4223 must be an 850 CFM center squirter based on the 50cc accelerator pump and the progressive secondary throttle linkage, but what is throwing me is the choke plate. I’d expect to see no choke plate and a bracket added for the air cleaner stud like on the 4224.
Both the 4223 and 4224 were engineered by Edelbrock in conjunction with Holley specifically for Tunnel Ram applications.
