Have a Lincoln, Merc, ford 8 inch rear end under my '29 Willys. When I bought it, was told it was a '70,s Maverick, Year unknown. Ok, want to replace the shoes and drums. Drum outside dia-11.5/8"....Drum overall heighth-3.25".... shoe contact surface dia inside-10"....shoe contact surface inside 2.00" wide... Actual shoe width 1.75"....5 lug, 4.5 bolt pattern. Everything is great so far to match a 73' mor so Maverick, but when I get the new drums, the big hole in the middle that fits the locater on the axle, is TOO SMALL. It is like 2.43" and mine is 2.78" . I found some drums with 2.78 center hole, but they are for '75 Cougar and have wider shoe contact surface that will not fit . What have I got ? If you have a 5 lug, 4.5 lug pattern, FOMOCO 8" rear end and know what it came off of, please look at the Hub hole and if it is 2 3/4+, small shoe (1.75), 10" drum, please let me know what make and year it is ! Thanks
The center hole got bigger after 74. Check wagner part BD60314 also check this thread. Used late model drums same size and much cheaper. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=751242
Try looking at '68 Mustang rear ends, I used a '68 8"in a '49 Willys panel , it was narrow enough that I could use 10" wheels and had no clearance problems. ................Jack
1984 85 f 150 ... small brake shoe....light duty ....they are shaped a little different but they work ...
The larger hole started when they went to disc brakes. A typical Ford wheel would hit the caliper and the disc hub needed to be stout so when Ford made the disc brake change, the new wheels had a larger hole so the rear axle hubs were bigger too. So like others have said it's probably from a mid 70's rear when the original car it came from would have had disc brakes in front.
