I keep an eye out for 42-48 Buick taillights and even bid on these. I forgot to put my final bid in near the end while I was out in the shop.

However, I just checked to see what they went for, thinking I probably missed a deal, yeah - NOPE! Some dudes let emotions do the bidding, wow!

Think it was an error? It takes 2 to get there.

I hope the seller was a HAMBer!

And I thought guys were nutty bidding ‘32 headlamps with the bar and original V8 emblem to $1400 in the Krinke auction in North Dakota a week ago. Wow!

My old grandma said a fool and his money are soon parted. What was a new Buick worth in 1946? Probably similar money to what the tail lights sold for. I know theses are missing the metal bucket , but ….. 341F17DB-0BE9-4019-A083-0DB8F0903F6D.jpeg

Nothing matters except how bad do you want it, where are you gonna find another one, and how much money you can spend.
Being self employed, I don't make a ton of money, but have spent stupid, really stupid money on stuff I decided I was going to own, come hell or high water.
    Don't regret any of it.

I never knew 42-48 Buick taillights were sought after or valuable. IMHO, I don't thick they're very good looking (for Custom work) and couldn't imagine them on anything other that a Buick.

They do look good on a Model A Coupe or Roadster, think Bass was the first guy to use them on a HAMB build. Bob :)

I don't think they're terribly sought after, not like the smaller sized ones (they're rare). There are even better and complete pairs for far less on eBay currently. This is just one of those rare auctions where the perfect two bidders showed up (at least for the seller).

What year are these "smaller size ones"?

It seems lately some of the prices are really stupid, almost seems like some sort of shill bidding going on.Its funny how some items get to such a high price and the same item in another auction is way lower,But stuff is getting more rare by the day,I bought a grille for my 37 on the big auction site about 15 years ago,it has a small piece broke out of it the bottom lower corner, not really noticible,i paid 29.99 for it,today they want 1100 for them, but they dont seem to be selling?. harvey

Keep in mind that just because that was the high bid, doesn't mean the buyer actually came through and paid it. it's very plausible that someone put in $1500 as a max bid instead of $150 and another bidder made a simultaneous incorrect bid of $1400 instead of $140 which pushed the first bidder up to $1410.

I do this stuff for a living, it happens more often than you think. Come back to this guy's listings in a couple weeks and see if the same lights got relisted. I wouldn't doubt it.

You're probably 100% right. Still, that's one hell of a shock for the seller at bid's end.

I see this on ebay on the motorcycle parts, there is some clown in Wisconsin who consistently get these outrageous prices, while other same listings sell for the the going market value. It is true, stuff has increased in price, but I think there is some manipulating going on with this stuff.

Bad thing is that most of the why the high selling price posts are probably correct.
Some guy just flat had to have "original" and nothing else would do even though for his restoration he now has to send the Bezels off to a chrome shop to be redone.
Get two or three of them on the same item and the war is on.
I had that happen with a Mopar small block to AX-15 bellhousing I got with my AX-16 transmission. Sold the bellhousing for three times what I paid for the whole bellhousing and trans.

Shill bidder, I'd say that happens a bit too often on some items. You post your max bid the first day you see the auction pop up and no one bids against you until the last five minutes and your bid went from minimum bid to 5.00 under your max bid and you ended up with the item.

Flat ass made a mistake on the max bid, As Squablow said, that seems to happen a lot.

Just how does your scenario work @Mr48chev ? If you establish a top price you are comfortable with and you had to pay that it should not be a problem. But beyond that how could the “shill bidder” know how to stop just under the limit of your proxy bid?

I guess that's why I relate more to the regular size ones... could be my personal attribute or my personality!

It is all guess work, nobody can get inside the head of a bidder. Just hope the seller gets paid. Bob
