Does any one know the horsepower ratings for a 1953 GMC 248 vs the 270? I am looking at one of these tomorrow and I am kind of curious as to how much better the 270 is for beater/driver.

    Thanks,
    Conor

The 248 was the standard GMC motor until at least into 1955. I don't know the horsepower difference but am sure you can find it at www.OldGMCTrucks.com.

I could look in my Motors manual and find the answer to this. But. It seems to me that just using common sense would show a 270 to have a little over 9% greater swept volume than a 248. Generally then, you could expect around 9% more torque and if that is true at any given RPM you would have 9% greater HP. Just rough guessing. Now if you think you would like a 270 what about a 302? +.060 it's a 311. Mine went 177 in 1980. Think what you could do today.

Thanks for the replies. Until tomorrow, I won't know which motor is in the truck. I was just curious about the differences to help with an assessment of the asking price. Either way it's pretty cheap and I would just be using it as another driver/beater while I do some tear down / rebuild work on my '54 F100. Plus, it never hurts to have another cool old truck. I like old trucks!
