I have scoured the inliner's web site, Hemming's and here and still can't find a match for the numbers on a straight 6. So I'm asking for help here. I had always been told the engine in this car was a 235. After seeing some codes I am leaning toward's it being a 216. The number right behind the distributor reads: B F 8 I 8 9 4 8 9 The number on the lower portion of the block (below the oil breather tube) reads: GM 839770 14 42 Anyone have any input? Thanks, N8
Yes, it appears its a 216 with the 839770 casting. http://www.adchevy.com/tools/castinglookup/?castingnumber=839770&submit=Lookup# The stamping behind the distributor is BF, which indicates a 1948 3100 series truck engine from what I found. Others may chime in with more info. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm
