Event Coverage George Poteet @ Bonneville Today

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bib Overalls, Sep 16, 2012.

  1. For those of you who follow Land Speed racing George Poteet went in to the record books again today. He took the Speed Demon to a two way average of 419 MPH. No other man has gone faster, record wise, than George in a piston driven land vehicle. He did it with a "D" motor. Tomorrow he will try to break the record he set today with a "C" motor. His best run ever was a 457 MPH blast at Speed Week 2011 but he was unable to make a backup run.

A "D" engine is 306 cubic inches or less. A "C" engine starts there and goes up to 372 inches, I believe.

AWSOME! I have grown up around Mr.Poteet he is a active member of the "Memphis Street Rodders" who are the oldest club around our parts. He heard i was building an A model a few years back and asked me to pay him a visit at his shop a few minutes from where i live, so the following weekend my dad I go down and visit him. After spending a couple hours talking and looking at his cars he begins giving me things to help finish my car that i couldnt afford, Steering wheel, gauges, brake pedal assembly, polished straight steering column, etc; This is not your typical greedy rich man. He is a cool guy and will do whatever he can to help his fellow hot rodders especially the youngsters like me.

  18. excellent. It was fun last year for the finals sitting in Norway listening to the live feed!

Just ran 449. Did the Speed Demon start out as Ron's flathead powered liner? Think I saw an article in Hot Rod about Dick Landy(?) building the motor several years ago.

  20. Yes,it was called "Flat Attack" I think...

  21. Flatfire was the name when it ran a flathead. I believe that the current engines are Duttweiler built.

After the flathead, it ran a GM Ecotec and was called Ecofire.

Yes, congrats to a good guy and team, very impressive.

It is my understanding that the Speed Demon looks very similar to Flat/Echo fire but is a new, different car.

Congratulations! Its difficult to imagine that speed from a piston engine.

  25. Wow, learned something today! I thought they were the same car.

I will say that in-person the two cars and specifically Speed Demon are very slick and incredible builds. The packaging to get the V8 engine and turbos inside the body shell is quite a feat.
