I just rebuilt a 1930 Model A Gemmer steering box and I was wondering how much gear oil I should put in it. I thought I read some where that there was a precise amout to be used, or should I just go ahead and fill it up? Thanks in advance.

  3. I don't, but I'll BTTT it for ya, and throw stars on the thread.

Almost as good as an answer, right?

Jack up the front end, pour 600w oil in it and turn the wheel lock to lock a couple of times with the plug out. Refill and do again. Put the plug in and your good to go. By doing it this way, you insure that the oil gets all over the moving parts.

Fill to the top with straight STP. 600W is for the old days.

I'll try to post again - I just flunked Model A and HAMB 101! According to Mac's in Lockport NY, the 7-tooth steering box takes 7 3/4 oz of 600 wt oil; the 2-tooth only takes 4 1/2 oz.
