I need to patch the bottom of the door and inside edge of the door. Can someone tell me what gauge metal is used in this area. I am thinking maybe 20 gauge. I would also assume it is best to try and use US steel for this

Go for 18 gau. The factory used 19 gau. The 18 gauge will hold it's shape better and you have a little more to grind.

  3. In our Gene Winfield metal class this summer he said he normally uses 18 gauge. We chopped a '51 Merc and that's what he used for the patches.

use a digital vernier on the parent material to get correct and accurate thickness ,its important when welding the patch material in they a close as possible to the same thickness.Makes metal finishing a lot easier.
