Technical Gas tank baffles in a wedge shaped tank.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Dec 18, 2016.

  1. I've never done one like this before ,,,nor seen one either.

In addition to normal side slosh baffles :

my common sense tells me I need a straight baffle to keep the fuel from running up to the top of the wedge under acceleration. And that it should have smaller fuel transfer holes towards the bottom and even smaller holes at the top for airflow.

The tank will mount like this, front on the left, rear on the right.

Another 3/4 shot of it reversed.

  5. Just from the looks of it I would run a full width baffle (across) from where the bend is on the bottom, parallel to face (forming a trapezoid area and a triangle area) and then maybe two side baffles for side to side...... but I haven't done this before either...

mad mikey, foam might work in there. If you use foam, be sure to isolate/baffle the fuel pickup, lest a hi-speed lean condition be created. Very annoying and hard to find. Don't allow the foam to act as a fuel filter.

Put a 'cage' around the pickup/level sender, you're good to go...

BTW I hate foam. Only one that I know of that can handle ethanol and its would cost close to $200 to do that tank.

The other foams will break down and screw up just about every part of your fuel system.

Thoughts from an off road racer. Yes you want a full width baffle. I would go with larger holes to the top and vertical slots at the bottom. The slots should go all the way to the base of the tank to allow for full drain back. I would run 2 side baffles as well with the same style of slots and holes. I would also try to have some sort of sump area to create a true low spot to draw from if you have any room under the tank. Glenn S.

  19. for some reason i think the baffles should run diagonally up the sides, starting in the middle and running towards the top of the sides. why? i don't know. maybe i just want to watch you do the math calculating the angles?
actually if they ran the opposite direction, starting in the middle near the top and flaring forward toward the out sides it would give you more room for the sender. basically creating a little V-eed compartment.

2 side baffles should be enough. Open bottom corners, maybe a 2-3" 1/2 circle at the center. I think a fore and aft baffle is too much unless it's a rock crawler. 2 sides will be fine. Drag racer? Street car?

  22. I was just saving that for later if I needed it :D

  25. Might be overthinking it a bit-

But I'm thinking this one of those things that you know how it works because you've first learned what doesn't work and a few different ways.

  27. Yeah I was studying that the other day.
Apparently getting it wrong is cause of a lot if problems.
There's a lot of info on what not to do, because it's mostly a "HEY YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" so let us do it for you article. It's Not really a "thus is what and why" article so it's just a surface scratching on theory.

Great rant, enjoyed that immensely! Some funny shit right there.
That is a very sane suggestion from a person with "crazy" in his name. Are you going to run an in tank fuel pump? If so, cage it as well. Most of my tanks have had a 2 or 3 inch tall "bowl" that the pump sits inside of, slots around the bottom for flow. About 6 inches square. The pumps I have used work with a minimum of 8 inches of tank depth, looks like you have that. The cage will keep it from running dry when cornering fast or under hard acceleration, not that you would do something like that.

I like where you are installing the tank, but how are you going to fill it? I remember someone using a moon tank upfront to fill the car, an electric transfer pump moved the fuel back to the main tank. That would avoid a long fill tube and add a reserve tank for your thirsty hemi's. Just an idea. You have always given me some good ones so I figured I owed you.

    Continue rant here.

What S10 frame looks best with my car body and wedge shaped baffled tank mounted on it?

That wasn't a rant, really it wasn't. I could throw down a rant just so can compare and you'd know the difference. Such an event would be purely for edification and medicinal purposes. I was simply including terms and subjects that get all the love around here since an honest to goodness car building question didn't seem to be getting any love at all. It seems to have worked a little. :p
