  1. ...what's goin' on in the shop.
First up, a set of over-weight 32 truck doors...
    Starting with...

Just a hint of the hinge reveal molding.

    Some rivets...

    A little "Plop"

Some fresh out of the wheel, skins...

    Out with the bad...

    Brass is for trophy's....

    Time for bottoms..

Fabbing up new door frame bottoms...

    Looking the part....

Next step will be to remove the rust and do the fitting...

  3. And on we go...

    Off she goes...

    Time to fit and trim

    Fire up the torch..

    Looking good so far..

There's gotta be HUNDREDS of guys out there that need to follow this thread. Almost every '32 truck door I own needs this work.

  5. You are right...this is set # 4 I believe...

  6. Off to the drivers to see what we have...

    Uh Oh....

    Not good

The skin was brazed right to the hinge!

The door frame below the hinge on both doors was pretty much pooched..

    And the rear corner...

The lower part of the regulator panel was so bad I just replaced it..

I had to find the correct bottom molding profile but, had no luck anywhere.
Fortunately with a little careful detective work....

    V walla.....

Now its time to lay-out and fab the hinge moldings, or reveals...

    nice work.

how old do you think the previous "repair" was? I have a friend that thinks bondo glass, brazing and more bondo on top is the way to go and all that welding and making new metal parts is a waste of time because "by the time the bondo fails, we will all be dead and gone".

  8. Hello Ratfink
I am not sure when the last "repair" was.
The truck has been local for some time, I would guess around 10 to 15 yrs.
Let's put it this way....well within our lifetime!
It's funny you made this comment, as my customer said "these doors will now outlast me and the next guy"...

When I fab or repair something I build it to last much longer than me. I'd be embarassed to think the next guy who gets the car would see crap and think I put it there. My name's worth more than that.

"Jealous" isn't adequate to describe my thoughts about your metal working abilities:) Question--are you using the DHC-2000 torch to do all of the welding? Are you using the matching regulators that DHC sells or "standard" Victor/Harris/etc regulators?

  12. Thank you!

  13. When you are really lucky, you get a customer who realizes this...

  14. Thanks, much appreciated!
I use the Dillon exclusively when gas welding.
I have a set of regulators that are designed for low pressure output, they have no brand name on them.... I will post a pic...
I previously used "regular" units but, was always guessing with the pressure.

  15. Nice to see pride in workmanship.
I never want someone to look at my work and say
    "who the hell did that?"

Doing it right is never easy or fast.

very nice work, I wish I was that good with a torch

  17. This is the bit that sets my skins apart...the hinge reveal...
First I have to make sure the hinge is in the correct plane, fore and aft and up and down. this is critical or no one could fit the door to the truck...

    Hinge pins are in alignment...

Swage in the reveal....for deuce roadster doors I actually made a set of dies for my brake press

    Carefully trim for the hinge..

Looking like a door skin now...

Trial fit, as you can see the skin now has the fold over flanges...

    Oooo looks good...

Stand back...a little self indulgent pride...

Make sure all is well with the recipient...gaps hinges etc..

Next thing will be to cut out the regulator panels to "hammer weld" the skins on. I do this to access the back of the skin for my weight or dolly..

  18. Thanks Noland.

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_0480.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

Jig the door up for easy access, and fire up the torch once again...

    A closer look..

    From the front...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7567.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    From the rear...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7569.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    check the hinge...<a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7570.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>..

  25. That theres the way it should be done. Keep up the good work.

  26. Same thing to the drivers side..

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7572.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    Some weld detail...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7573.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    The inside...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7574.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    Getting there...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7576.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

A little detail of how the bottom corners go..

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7586.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    Then

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7589.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    Result..

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7590.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7600.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    A little tweaking and...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7603.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    polishing...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_0491.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

Before the doors can be closed back, up I noticed a gusset was missing that made up the window track. Perfect time to repair...

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_7582.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    <a href="http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/hammerweight/media/IMG_0498.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

This what I have so far...

Perfection! Hmmm. Wonder what's the cost to ship doors to Canadia?

Not meaning to sound overly gushy, but...
I have been admiring Mr. Marshall's work for decades, this is but a small sample of his abilities. I've also worked on cars he has replaced panels on, his quality is consistently second to none.

Edit: I'd be curious to know more about the low pressure regulators. I have a Henrob I've barely used because I have only one set of high pressure regulators, it's a pain trying to set them low enough then switch back for a conventional torch.

  29. I'm kind of curious why you wouldn't sandblast the door insides and treat them
    while the skins are off?
