I have this old trophy from the FURYS Car Club Long Beach. Its from 1958 it reads 2nd place Poker Run. I've had it forever, originally I thought it was my dads but he says it wasnt? Just curious about any info on the club?
For a second I thought I was reading a club called the "FURRYS" like the goofballs that dress up in animal costumes to get off. But since it's a rad name like the Fury's I am very much relieved. Hahaha!!! Killer trophy and I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of their cars and the poker runs.
I also tries Fury Car club Long Beach and came up with nothing. I am sure that someone form then will speak up and let us in on some info. As for now I am going to go snooping on Rikster's site for some stuff.
A little bit of info and a picture of the club jacket here. Looks like a really cool book. http://books.google.com/books?id=7G4vIdbxLX4C&pg=PA75&lpg=PA75&dq=furys+car+club+long+beach&source=bl&ots=iHQ-4GRZy8&sig=UUH6jt59xkbiSHYlRFzRoI65CeI&hl=en&ei=QEU5Tq-hJsy10AHQw5DkAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=furys%20car%20club%20long%20beach&f=false
Back on topic? Was this a club that failed or never got off the ground? One of you SoCal old timers must know something about them? I looked here and nothing? http://www.relicsandrods.com/carclubplaques.htm
They must have been active as they apparently organized the 1958 poker/reliability run. Here's the ad they put in the 1958 Renegades of Long Beach 1st Rod & Custom Motorama program. Mick
The Furys was a Long Beach , CA car club formed in about 1955 ended about 1959. We had a very successful poker run in about 1957, followed by car show in the LB Mem stadium. Then we had a big dance at the LB auditorium (all the big names at the time The Platters etc ) , a big storm that night, a total failure, end of club
I have an issue of the Crash Helmet from June 1957 and there are a couple of pages that talk about the Poker Run put on by the Furys. On another thread about Southern California Car Clubs, RRuss posted these scans from the copy he has ..... Notice that in the photo above, there are several guys with Furys jackets on. Wish I did have a photo of their plaque, if they had one. Seems like every other club from Long Beach had one ..... Long Beach Car Clubs
I recently came across a Furys jacket. The logo and font are the same as I've seen in photos, but the script is in black thread. The jacket is green with black leather sleeves. Do you know if this was an early jacket, later jacket or an imposter? Thanks.
