Its late 1969, you run at the dragstrip on the weekends, big block in a 55, what air cleaner did you run? I was born in 71 so I wasn't around to know what people were running then. I have a 14" chrome one now but it just doesnt look nostalgic to me. Its my gasser-fied 55 so I want something a little more period correct. I'm going to change out the valve covers to cal custom or M/T's, but I need a good air cleaner to match the era. Thanks, Scot
hmmm for me, late 69 would be tunnelram with 2 holleys and probably either just 2 chrome aircleaners or a Hillborn style scoop but that's just me
No air cleaner, no restriction of any kind. Looking to get more air in for the 13 seconds it took to run. Scoop, Velocity stacks. For the street you can look at some from Dennis at http://www.obrientruckers.com/ecom/category/239/ Terry
I was racing in '69 I just ran el cheapo 10" air cleaners when I was running 2x4 or the littler one of I was running a tri-power setup. I was told by an industion specialist back then that they performed better with an air cleaner than without one. But he also said that a tunned length stack was the best. I couldn't afford to get tunned length stacks spun. If I were running a single 4 bbl I would look for a 10" or a 12" open element and then get two elements and stack 'em.
I remember the stacked elements, we still ran them in the eighties. I don't know if I have hood clearance for that, I'll have to check it, I think that would look period. Thanks for the tip pork!
I wish they were all that easy. Maybe go with a pair of 2" air cleaners instead of 3" you would still get the illusion of a tall air cleaner that way. I don't know how much room you got.
I had a really sweet cross ram for the 55, I sold it to buy other stuff for it. Now i'm really regretting it. Here it is in my basement:
Drag strip only-- open stacks. When you bolted the street tires and exhaust back on the car, you put the aircleaners back on it. I've had to rewire a couple of different cars with the foam elements on them for customers. Seems like a backfire will set them off like a roman candle sometimes. Larry T
Excuse the hijack, but do the Olds/Caddy " batwing" type air cleaner have any place on a 60's gasser?
When I ran mine I pulled the air cleaner(s) off. Whatever I ran it didn't get used except to get to the strip. Here's my setup now:
