What is the proper or accepted procedure to adjust front brake drums(have finned Buick) on 1940 Ford???Looked at some u tube reels and they are not in agreement for proper adjusting procedures/every one wants to do it a different way!! Help—-Early Ford flathead lover in Texas.
HERE'S THE PROCEDURE FOR adjusting 1940 Ford brakes. Adjusting Brakes for a 39 – 41 Ford - The Ford Barn
Rumbleseat's directions in post 3 on the Ford Barn link has always worked for me; just have keep track of which direction to turn the adjusters.
The better shape (less worn) your lower adjusters are in; the easier the adjustment and the better the resulting brakes. The adjusters are not designed to force the shoes into place; they allow the shoes to be centered into the arc of the drum.
Here's how I have always adjusted my 40 Ford brakes. Adjusting Brakes for a 39 – 41 Ford - The Ford Barn Applying 25 pounds at the pedal makes a big difference.
I tried “Blake 27” suggestion that he graciously printed out. It was pretty easy to understand and the brakes feel really good. Thanks to all who replied as the “power of the HAMB” comes thru again. I appreciate all of those that take the time to respond to another rodders dilemma. Below are pics of my 36 five window with Halibrands that have been on 3 different cars and my early ford wheels with Ford caps. The Halibrands are a little too wide for the 66 f-100 truck rear end and the early ford rear wheels(I made 8 years ago/early ford centers Chevy 7 in wide outer).but the chev/ford wheels have 5 in of backspace versus the 3.5 backspace on the Halibrands.
