Like the topic says, what's the concensus on this one. Facing forward looks more purposeful and aggressive however I have heard that carbs actually perform better facing backwards. In my case i will be using these on a rochester tripower setup on aSBC. Thanks

  2. I prefer the look of them opening backwards.

Less chance of bugs or dirt blowing into them at speed. I've also heard that they preform better opening backwards. Maybe something to do with vacuum sucking air in rather than air being forced down and overloading the carb/creating turbulence?

  3. I run mine to the rear
when forward it does not run well at hwy speed

What did it do when you ran them forward?

Yep. Kind of makes one wonder about all those 60's muscle cars and their forward facing hood scoops, especially in the dead air spot which is the middle of the hood. So called Pontiac "ram air" comes to mind.

I run mine forward on 3x2 roschester set up on 327 with no hood, I have been driving this set up for 5 years with no issue , personally I like the agressive look of forward facing scoops, if you look at the old drag cars pictures most ran the scoops forward.

I had a Evans 4 jugger on my flathead in my '40 Coupe. Stacks were backwards, sure looked like a lot of 'em when you opened the hood! (from the front)
Guys used to say, "Wow... Four carburetors..."

They looked as 'Right' as my Levi's, Engineer Boots, and white tee shirt and red windbreaker!

  14. i ran a eight deuce on top of my blown hemi. the car was run without a hood. if i ran the scoops forward the gas would end up all over the windshield. the engine as expected did not run as well compared to having them facing the rear. facing the rear over 100mph still put some gas on the windshield but not as much. guys racing back then ran a sheet metal cover over the top to block the wind. i never tried a cover.

    Mine two rear as well.
It seems if facing forward the front carb gets too much air the faster I go,
    which is logical.

You want them in the rear. That is why cowl induction hoods are so good. There is a low pressure area just in front of the windshield, and it allows the carbureators to work better. Think of it as you drinking water out of a straw vs. the hose. This is just a generalized statement, there are almost always exceptions. But, just like everybody said to face them backwards.

My old 6x2 setup that I sold. I kept the air-cleaners though.

Seems to me it'd depend on where they are relative to everything around them. In really clean airflow I'd expect that they'd work best facing forwards. In really turbulent air I'd expect it would be much of a muchness which way they're facing. In between I suppose it depends on where the pressure is (it's high pressure you want, not low.)

Facing forward the air is forced into the carb, facing backwards the carb is allowed to do its job by sucking in air.

I found out the hard way, which way the scoop faced. I had a 57 Chevy with a scoop facing forward. Just installed the scoop and threw the hood back on the car with only the front hatch in place. The rear back hinges were not bolted to the hood. My buddy and I took a quick spin down the highway, just to see if anything changed. Well at around 40 mph the rear of the hood started to come up, and even as I was off the highway slowing down, I could not get it to come down. The scoop had nothing to do with it. After we stop and the hood drop back down, my buddy, looks at me and said, "I think you have the scoop on backwards". The end result was that I sold the hood and went with a fiberglass tilt nose.

  24. Sorry, I'm confused...

What does that have to do with anything?
You put your hood on with just the front latch and no back hinges. You got up to speed and the hood started to float. Only the rear came up because the front was latched down. It floated because the air coming through the grill and up through the engine compartment needed a place to escape, and the hood offered little resistance.

What does your hood have to do with which direction the scoop is facing???

My 6 x 2 froggies are facing forward. I'll rotate them the opposite direction to see if there is a difference in how the engine (350sbc) runs.

  26. It can depend on what carbs you are using.
The early 94's did not have a float bowl vent in the air stream and should not be effected by the direction of the scoop. Later 94's and Stromberg's may actually draw fuel from the bowl vent and prevent proper flow of fuel from the jets/main wells with the scoops facing forward. Changing the angle of the vent may allow the scoop to face forward. (all part of tuning)
