Keeter and Stewart from Joe Malliard’s Automotive Engineering in Long Beach.

    Hello,

Living in So Cal does wonders for hot rods and drag racing memories. In thinking back to the big invasion of the Midwest and Eastern drag racers in 1959 opened our eyes as to similar cars on the Westcoast over the years. The Orange Speed Sport Modified Roadster was ‘The” exemplary model for other similar builds. They were competitive not only in the Modified Roadster class, but ran against the top FED race cars in the Top Eliminator events.

Some of those old rear engine roadster builds came from the Bean Bandits of San Diego, George Cerny from Compton, CA. Holly Hedrick’s flashy modified roadster, the above Keeter and Stewart Red roadster, even the ill fated Henslee-Cook roadster from San Diego. There was even another one from Compton, the Pate Brothers and Bill Crissman. So, the list goes on. But first, for the specific naming category folks, were they rear engine modified roadsters or mid-engine roadsters?

The early label was rear engine modified roadsters and the name stuck. After all, compared to the front engine builds, the motors were in the rear of the driver. So, a simple nomenclature was developed… a rear engine modified roadster. But, the only rear engine model race car was actually the twin motor version of the Bustle Bomb. There was a motor in front and rear of the whole car. So, it was as far back in the rear as possible. The age old question heard throughout the generations of “Does that make my butt look big?” trapdoor question applies here… actually, “it did make the rear look big…!” The Bustle Bomb!”

So, for this version, the local Westside of Long Beach shop of Joe Mailliard had a hand in the Jim Keeter and Dick Stewart Red Modified Roadster in this drawing.

“1927 T Modified Roadsters, and this nice red one with a matching ’40 Ford push car is the Keeter-Stewart B/MR. The guy’s jacket simply says Long Beach, and with Joe Mailliard’s familiar name on the side.”
“Jim Keeter was a recognizable face at many of the Southern California drag strips, especially Long Beach (Lions Drag Strip), Fontana, and San Fernando. Jim had been a partner with Dick Stewart in a variety of nitro classes, but Stewart was seriously injured in a racing accident at Fontana and quit the sport.”

    Good Friday to all.
In every shop or garage, that hot rods are built in, there is the most important tool that is universally used, but is rarely paid any artistic attention to!
So for this week, I decided to give the WILTON bench vise, a chance to be industrial art!

  18. Good morning guys. I've been wondering what has happened to the early morning crew on the Friday Art Show. I'm an early riser and I miss seeing the work when I first get up.
    Later,

3d exercise in off topic-ness... if it's too far off top dead center, I'll delete. Great show this week! Screenshot (195).png
