  19. So I decided I needed a new shop chair and I had some odd shaped metal I wasn’t using. The old seat was gone and the new one is here. I still have to make some cushions, but I like the look of this and it serves as a show piece for my shop with welding, solid rivet, dimple die, louvers, and of course bead rolling. Kind of just put everything into one piece.

    Hello,

In our years at Lions Dragstrip from 1957 to 1960, we participated in the A/Stock class and when that got overloaded with the 100 hp more 409 cars, we moved on to a C/Gas 1940 Willys Coupe. But, during those early 57-59 years, I got to know a person everyone saw at one time or another.

When you took off from the starting line, he was always to your left after the orange tower. If you were in the spectator side stands, he was to the right of the orange tower. If you just finished your race, he was on your left, as you came back to the orange tower to get the Speed and E.T. ticket. It was Mr. Childers from the Dilday Ambulance Services in Long Beach.

(some kid in his khaki pants and blue nylon jacket in a conversation with Mr. Childers.)

They provided all of the emergency needs at the dragstrip. I got to know him quite well as the spot next to his white ambulance was my “secret” photo shooting spot. If I stood next to him and between our conversations, took some movies, the security police thought I was a good friend of Mr. Childers. If it was a new guy on rotation, then I got yelled at and was told to go back to the pits bleachers. The new guys were not very nice.

The white Pontiac Ambulance and Mr. Childers played an important part in our 1940 Willys C/Gas coupe accident. While we all watched the Willys explode and catch on fire, that ambulance was on the run immediately. Atts Ono and I jumped into our 58 Impala and took off down the dragstrip towards the burning Willys wedged in the spectator side fence. As we got there, it was horrendous, with flames coming out of the windows.

We were using every available fire extinguisher around and the ones borrowed from other racers, I thought my brother was inside. But, someone touched my arm and said my brother was back at the white ambulance, just after the timing lights.

As I skidded to a halt in the Impala, Mr. Childers was just putting my brother in the back of his white Pontiac ambulance. Then he told me that the dragstrip will be closing and he would stay with my brother at the hospital until my parents and I arrived ASAP. Friendship has no boundaries… Thanks for the memories, Mr. Childers and the white Pontiac Ambulance.

    upload_2020-4-17_4-24-53.png Thanks, Mr. C...
Note: An eerie coincidence was that Mr. Childers was from the Dilday Family Ambulance Service, a part of the Dilday Mortuary Company from Long Beach. My brother and I both went to high school with the Dilday Brothers from Bixby Knolls.

  22. JNAKI cool story. My 34 Dodge delivery was an Ambulance when it was new. I sanded it down to it's original paint, and it was white with green crosses on the doors. It said Ambulance on the rear side panels. I don't know how to photoshop or do P.C. stuff. So maybe the { Moose } or someone could do a photoshop of it as an Ambulance. Keep in mind I chopped it 3 inches. lol So if anyone wants to try it. { Thanks } Here's a photo you could use. :) Ron.......... 788.jpg

    Hello,
As you can see, there were different models of ambulances for daily use and specialty use. This 2 door Pontiac version came from the Dilday Family Mortuary Ambulance Services. It was not a commercial big city ambulance. It was a 2 door version, but met the needs of Lions Dragstrip quite well.

    Jnaki
Mr. Childers was hired by Dilday Ambulance Services that was under contract to Lions Dragstrip. This ambulance was at Lions Dragstrip from the early days until somewhere around 1964.
