I am wanting to french my headlights but my current doors are pot metal .

I like the look of the mid 50's Ford Fairlane but do not know what they are made of???

Anyone got a list of what headlight doors were mild steel and not pot metal or stainless.

    Thanks for the help.

  2. any for headlight bezel made for Ford between 54-56 are pot metal. 52-3 Ford/52-54 Merc(same headlight) are stamped steel and are common place for use of Frenching. 55 Chevy eyebrows are common aswell as oldsmobiles headlight bezels, but you have to use the frontmost top area of your fender to use them. As they are more than just frenching bezels.

What kind of car are do you plan on frenching?

  3. We used 52 Ford rims to french , you can usually find them in flea markets at local car shows.

  4. You have retractable doors over your headlights? And you want to French them? I'm confused.

I think it's because he said "his current doors are pot metal".

He called them 'doors' because that IS what they are called. Why? I dunno, it just is.

    Hey,

Fuck the diecast or stainless ones, make your own!
Bend a 1/4 piece of round stock in a perfect circle, around a pipe if necessary, 7'' in dia. Next, take a piece of string and wrap it around your existing headlamp door. Hold the string at 12 o clock & again as it wraps around to meet at 12 o clock. Now measure the length of string and cut out a piece of c.r.steel sheet 18 or 19 gage to the length of that string. The width of the strip will be deturmind by your choice of design depth. Now bend the strip into a ring shape and weld the ends together with a butt weld. Compare the ring to the 1/4 X 7'' wire ring you've already made up. It should be close in dia. Now the fun begins!! You can add shape and form to your new "french" by use of an English wheel, a beading machine, a stretcher( as in shrinker/stretcher) machine, where you would stretch the end of the ring to "flair" it to shape, or a hammer and dolly. Using any one, or all of these tools, you can make any shape of "french", from oem to "porn-star nipple". the only limit is your skill. Weld the shaped steel to the wire ring, and weld it to the fender.
Don't even think of trowelling plastic filler 1/2 thick over these and sanding these to shape! That's not metalwork!
