Hey guys: I have a tranny with serial: *99A-36574*
    Case #: 78-77-36-1

I looked it up in Mac's book but a little lost. I'm assuming its 39-41 Mercury maybe Ford but looks as if id makes it a Mercury? any help would be appreciate. Thanks.

I will give you a bump, and pics would help a ton. Ford casting numbers aren't known for there consistency.

That (the 99A part) a serial number, not a casting number, and falls into 1939 so it's Merc...the only other possibility would be a half ton ordered as a 239, and I don't know if that was possible in '39.
The 99 serial identifies the 239 engine, not necessarily in a Merc; it was used through 1948 and any FoMoCo car, truck, or commercial with 239 would have the 99 in its serial. After the war, all production line 8's were 239.

The serial number is early 1939 Mercury. These had the same 78 series gearbox cases as the Ford toploader cases. The rear mount is correct for 1939 also. It has the correct 81A-7222 shifter housing with the double detents.

The Merc swan neck shifter lever for '39 was slightly longer than the same lever for '39 Fords (due to the longer wheelbase of the car?).

It should have the '39 late style gears inside if all is original.
