Technical Ford Model A + '36 Mechanical Brakes =

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Retson the Racer, Jun 13, 2022.

  1. Before throwing your rocks at me, I have done a little bit of research. I know '35-38 rear and '37-38 front mechanical drums can be used with hydraulic brakes, but I am more-so interested in mechanical stuff first.

Has anyone installed Mechanical '36 brakes on a Model A?
Ideally I would love to run these "rocky mountain" styled wide five drums.

Last resort, I would run them on the back with juice brakes, and 37-39 drums on the front.

Maintenance and a set of floaters, will get you what you want.

  4. I think I need a little bit more than that.

I've searched trust me. I can't find a thread pertaining to running 36 brakes on a Model A.

@Retson the Racer Yes, it can be done. If Im not mistaken Jim Brierly has that setup on a speedster.

all those articles cover 35's also. most use 32 34 spindles, which work with a 35 drum also, but 36 is the odd ball long bearing snout, so you would have to use 36 spindles with a bolt on steering arm

  10. thank you for some useful information!! I'll give him a shout

  11. I run ‘35 brakes on the front of my T Coupe. Little bit of of fiddle to get it done. I’ve looked at doing the same at the rear but it’s coupling them up to the brake rods that’s stopped me bothering so far…

I have been collecting/hoarding/keeping 35-38 mechanical brake parts to have a look into this idea at some point. Will keep an eye out for your solution.

I believe 36 FRONT drums are a one year only. 35's will work. and give you the 5x5 1/2.

  14. After doing some research, I plan on running '36 vented drums on juice brakes on the rear. I'll be running '36 front drums on roundback spindles with no backing plates.

I believe Tom was refering to Ted's Floater Kit. From all reports very effective!
