Seem to remember Ford having 2 pinion shaft sizes Anyway to tell outwardly w/o teardown ? Donor car unknown and no tag. Want to order gears, but not teardown until they get here. TIA
Something that doesnt show up on those lists is that Ford used 2 different size pinions in the 9" case as well as the well publicized 28 and 31 splines. The standard duty rear in a good part of the 60's had a 8 3/4 ring; complete center sections will interchange with a true 9" with 28 spline axles. Then there is the 9 3/8 which looks a lot like a 9" but is a different animal altogether; those were in Lincolns and other fat cars of the roughly 68-72 era with the 429/460. Without a tag you can get confused.
