Hey Guys, I am looking at putting a Ford 9 inch in 54 Chevy. Can anyone who has put one in theirs tell me the dimensions to look for using mounting flange to mounting flange measurements? I am trying to avoid the expense of narrowing one.

You want one that is between 58" and 60" WMS-to-WMS (wheel mounting surface).

Brake drum assemblies varied, so measuring to the housing flanges, or backing plates may as well be meaningless.

You could also use an Explorer 8.8. arguably stronger than a 9", in some ways, easy to get, cheap, lots of ratios, OEM limited slip, disc or drum, and axle flanges that are solid, which means that they can be easily redrilled for Chevy pattern. 59-1/2" wide.
