happy presidents weekend guys!!! well I'm back in the garage trying to get my brakes in order and have some questions. question #1 I'm running a 9" in my 30 coupe. this diagram is pretty much my set up. I did not get the brakes fully loaded and complete when I bought it, so I picked up a hardware kit, cylinders ETC. put it all together and saw I dont have the part that the automatic adjuster spring hooks to, that hooked to the other shoe and has a tab on the adjuster. its goes from the shoe on the right to.... whats the part called and where can I find it?? auto zone, kragen and local places did not carry them. Is this part and the auto adj spring the only things keeping the lower shoes tight?? Question # 2 e-brake for these drums. is the e-brake hardware on the drums necessary to make these brake function?? can I get away with no e-brake and remove all the hardware to make it function and still drive the car with no problems?? please dont post I'm crazy not to run an e-brake, just want to know is it possible and any suggestions for this. like removing all the cable and housing and link and lever??, or leaving it in not hooked up?? etc. thanks guys!
I never hooked up my ebrake and my brakes work. HOWEVER i am in the process of finishing my car and im going to be hooking up the ebrake but i am missing one of the ebrake parking levers... I remember searching for one 2 years ago at parts stores and no one could find one to buy. If you find ever to buy misc pieces let me know cause i really need that break lever
why not hook up the e-brake im runnin the same in my 31 coupe and its easy? but it will work just fine without it in there!
I assume you're talking about the automatic adjuster lever. If that piece is not there, there is no way to keep the star wheel adjuster(bottom between the two shoes) from turning. the brake adjuster star wheel can turn and put the brakes out of adjustment. Before the auto adjust lever/ cable they used a spring behind the star wheel, between the shoes, to hold the brake adjustment. Try a junk yard. I've gotten them off old Ford trucks if the car brakes were getting scarce. They're basically all the same.
Seems like NAPA used to carry a manual adjuster change over kit that did away with many of those parts . Like everything else , they are probably outlawed by the NTSB .
All the parts stores sell "self adjuster repair kits". The part your looking for is included in the kit. The kits come in L/H and R/H versions and they don't cost much.
Check the raybestos site, they'll have what you need (i think they show pics of the items) and you can get the part numbers to order locally.
What about the cable hook? Is that cable part of the adjuster? That has nothing to do with the ebrake?
Everything in the picture of the kit is part of the self adjuster mechanism, and has nothing to do with the e-brake.
Gotcha. Thanks rich. I was putting the stuff together and also saw that with the anchor plate at the top, the cable hook ring on the anchor pin, that only one spring will fit. It made sure the plate was slid on all the way, without the cable both springs fit, but I obviously need the cable hook, so why don't they both fit? And I noticed the top springs will only go in with the opening of the springs facing down after they attach to the anchor pin, where as almost every pic online shows them hook facing up?? What's up with these brakes?!?!?
National Parts Depot may have the parts you need. You should have a certified mechanic check out the brakes before you drive the car as you seem to be a novice with brake work.
Located some parts. Have to wait for the work week to end to wrench unfortunately. Thanks for all the tips and advise guys! Very helpful. My GM brakes were so simple!
I'd like to know what happens at the other end of the cables where you hook to the ebrake lever. Ive always had a little trouble getting my lever end to feel like one in a production vehicle, it ends up usually that the ratio makes it heavy to pull up!!! Am I the only one having this problem or can somebody show how they set up the lever end...
You can add a lever in the system, so that you are pulling on the elnd of the lever, which will lessen the effort required, but increase the length of your pull in the cab. I added one in, when I put a disc brake rear end inmy buddy's car.
